Arrow Game 161: Tampa Bay Rays vs. Boston Red Sox

Flaherty Dominates Rays; Boston Secure Playoff Spot

The Boston Red Sox rode a masterful performance from right-hander Jack Flaherty to a convincing 7–0 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway Park. With the victory, Boston secured a spot in the 2024 MLB Playoffs. Flaherty (17-10) was in complete command throughout his 4-hit shutout, striking out nine and walking just one across 114 pitches; Game Score 87. Of Note, Flaherty was named MLB's #3 Performance of the Day.

Boston’s offense backed him with a fourth inning blast from Tyler O’Neill and a sixth inning smash from Jarren Duran. The decisive blow though came in a four-run eighth inning, highlighted by doubles from Duran, Rafael Devers, and Masataka Yoshida. On the day, O’Neill and Duran each finished with two hits, a home run, and multiple extra-base hits. Tampa Bay starter Shane McClanahan (18-13) labored through 7.1 innings and was charged with the loss after permitting all seven runs; Game Score 37.

The Rays, meanwhile, never managed to string together meaningful offense. Randy Arozarena, Josh Lowe, Ben Rortvedt, and Brandon Lowe accounted for their only hits of the afternoon. With clear skies and a lively crowd of 32,368, Fenway Park had the feel of a club sharpening itself for postseason play. Win the win, Boston improved to 88–73, while Tampa Bay slipped to 85–76 as the regular season neared its close.

Player of the Game: Jack Flaherty (Season: #12)

AL East Standings: 2nd Place, 7 Games Behind
