Cards news: Sept. 21 -- Labrum injury will end season for SP Showalter
The St. Louis Cardinals have learned right-handed pitcher Zach Showalter will miss the remainder of the regular season after he suffered a partially torn labrum during a 3-1 loss to the Minnesota Twins on Sept. 19.
Showalter, 27, is expected to be sidelined for three months.
The right-hander joins fellow starting pitcher Eric Segura who may miss the rest of the regular season after suffering a biceps injury on Sept. 14.
The team also is expecting a diagnosis on Sean Hermann, who left his Sept. 20 start against the Twins with an injury.
In 24 starts this season, Showalter has gone 7-5 with a 3.86 ERA.
His spot in the rotation will be taken by 25-year-old right-handed pitcher Phil Sandheinrich.
Sandheinrich has made 26 starts at AAA Memphis this season, going 14-6 with a 3.04 ERA.
In 2030, Sandheinrich made 20 starts for St. Louis and went 6-4 with a 4.94 ERA.
