May 10-12, 2058: vs Oklahoma City (3)

Game 1: When the Rays fell behind 7-0 in the 4th inning in this one I thought to myself this is too deep a hole for a Patented Publix Park Comeback, but I should have known not to underestimate this team in this ballpark and they rallied for a 12-9 win over the Sunbirds in the series opener. They put 3 on the board in the 4th, 3 more in the 5th and then doubled that total with 6 more in the 6th to win it. And they didn't need to homer as 15 singles and a pair of doubles were enough with 3 RBI each from Dantel Chinchilla, Omar Gaitan and Angel Gonzales, the latter hitting a bases-clearing double in that 6th inning. Elijah Whitaker's 2058 struggles continued with a terrible 3.1 6 6 6 3 3 start, Joe Rose (4-1) got the win with two scoreless innings, and Bill Sutherland picked up save #10 as he got the final out after Steve Swords made a mess in the 9th allowing a pair of runs.

Game 2: The Rays were let down by their offense and bullpen as they fell 2-1 in 10 innings to OKC, a 180-degree turn from yesterday's slugfest. The only Tampa Bay run came off the bat of Paul Mayes, who doubled in the 6th, but that should have been enough as Victor Boria was brilliant again (6 3 0 0 0 5) and they took a 1-0 lead into the 9th. But Bill Sutherland blew his fifth save of the young season, giving up a double and a single to let the Sunbirds tie, and then in the 10th Chris Friedman (1-2) allowed a run for the fourth straight outing although this one was unearned thanks to an Orlando Diaz error.

Game 3
: The Rays suffered a rare series defeat at home when Oklahoma City took an 8-4 win in the finale. Julio Mattila (2-2), coming off his best start of the season, turned in his worst at 3.2 9 7 7 1 4 and the Rays weren't really in it after the early innings. This despite the efforts of Jordan Sailes, who belted a 2-run homer (#7) after an RBI double in the first. Angel Gonzales had a solo shot (#9) for the other Tampa Bay run.

Team record: 25-15. The Yankees took 2 of 3 to shave the Rays' division lead to 1 1/2 games. Next up: A big 4-game series against those very New Yorkers in the Bronx.
