Blue Jays Series Recap

Series Overview – vs Blue Jays (July 7–9)

Result: White Sox sweep 3–0
Record moves to 37–56, Jays fall to 45–49.
Theme of the set: late-inning chaos, kids stepping up, and German Marquez redemption.

Game 1 – Sox 6, Jays 4

You trailed 4–0 heading to the bottom of the 8th and then absolutely detonated them:

Shane Smith: 5.0 IP, 1 R, kept you in it while Scherzer matched zeros early.

Seventh-inning bullpen wobble (Wilson tagged for 3) put you in that 4–0 hole.

8th-inning explosion:

Benintendi RBI double to finally get you on the board.

Samuel Zavala makes his MLB debut as a pinch-runner, comes around to score the second run.

After Quero’s RBI and an error load the bases, Luis Robert Jr. delivers the moment of the night: grand slam to straightaway center off Joe Kelly.

Ellard gets the W, Grant Taylor slams the door for save #6.

Downside: Jared Shuster leaves hurt mid-outing, and Benintendi also gets banged up running the bases.

Game 2 – Sox 5, Jays 4 (Walkoff)

Another comeback, this time walkoff style.

Vasil gets ambushed early: Santander two-run shot in the 1st, messy 2nd inning makes it 4–1 Jays.

Miguel Vargas drags you back with a 2-run homer in the 5th to cut it to 4–3.

Pen: Ellard + Clevinger combine for 5 scoreless to keep it a one-run game.

9th inning vs Jeff Hoffman:

Tirso Ornelas leadoff single.

Samuel Zavala, pinch-hitting, rips his first MLB hit, a single; Ornelas motors to third.

Vargas singles to tie it 4–4 (RBI #3 on the night).

Edgar Quero laces the walkoff single, Zavala scores the winner.

Zavala’s line in basically one inning of work: 2-for-2, 2 runs, scores tying and winning runs. Immediate cult-hero stuff.

Game 3 – Sox 3, Jays 1

The boring one… in a good way.

German Marquez: massive bounce-back after Coors – 6.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 5 K, completely silences them.

3rd inning:

Rookie Samuel Zavala doubles to right.

Lenyn Sosa follows with a 2-run homer off Gausman.

4th inning: Quero HBP, Bryan Ramos smokes an RBI double to make it 3–0.

Jays finally scratch a solo shot off Penn Murfee (Schneider) in the 7th, but Minter and Grant Taylor (save #7) finish it off.

Zavala’s first MLB start: 1-for-3 with a double and a nice assist on a play at third.

Series Stars

Samuel Zavala

Debut series: 4-for-6, 3 runs, 3 extra-base hits/advances, directly involved in the comeback in all three games.

Brings speed, lefty pop, and legit CF defense you were missing with Jankowski DFA’d.

Luis Robert Jr.

The Game 1 grand slam completely flipped the series.

Adds a triple and some key defensive plays across the set.

Miguel Vargas

Big 2-run homer in Game 2, plus key RBI in both comeback wins.

Rotation/Bullpen

Smith and Vasil both battled enough to keep you close.

Marquez looked like an ace in Game 3.

Clevinger, Ellard, Minter, Taylor: 8+ high-leverage, 0-run innings across Games 1–3.

What This Series Means

You just swept a fringe-contender and have won 4 of your last 6 since the Coors disaster.

The kids (Teel, Sosa, Ramos, Zavala) are now driving actual wins, not just “development reps.”

Zavala’s emergence + Ornelas’ steady production suddenly give you a legit left-handed core around Robert Jr. and Vargas.
