Subject: Contreras and Solomon Swapped

It took some time to iron out the details, but the Commodores and Monarchs have agreed to a swap. New York will get 30-year old LF Gabe Contreras with Oakland receiving 31-year old RHP Stephen Solomon in return. A source close to the trade talks said the two clubs were initially looking to make a bigger deal, but discussions broke off late last night. The two sides reconvened early today and eventually settled on this deal.

Lifetime Solomon has chalked up a 3-and-5 record with 4 saves and a 2.79 ERA.

Subject: Oakland, New Orleans Agree to Trade

You can't always get what you want, but sometimes you find a deal anyway. The Baseball News Network is reporting that Oakland and New Orleans have made a swap with 20-year old minor league LHP Rick Ackley, 25-year old 1B Justin Wahlberg, and 32-year old LHP Kyle Backus being shipped to the Slammers and in return the Commodores would get 34-year old LHP Paul Gregory.

Oakland general manager Pierre Lemieux said the two sides were close to a blockbuster trade before agreeing upon a smaller scale transaction.
"This is just a bit of housekeeping compared to what we wanted to do," he said. "I won't name names, but the potential deal we were close to making would have certainly grabbed some headlines."

A source inside the Oakland organization said the two sides might not be done dealing, and another transaction could be in the works.

New Orleans will retain a portion of Gregory's remaining contract.

Gregory has pitched in 403 games over his career, registering 1 save and a 128-94 won-lost mark. He has an ERA of 3.35 in 2065 innings and 2218 strikeouts.

The free agent market does not have many appealing relief options left so I turned to the trade market. These trades add some depth to our bullpen for this year. Solomon has 2 options left should he fail to break camp with the big league club, and Contreras was an outfielder without any options left and was not looking like he was going to make the team. Same goes for Backus and Wahlberg, and Ackley is a young reliever with not much potential. Gregory won the LL Pitcher of the Year award in 2017, but has fallen off since then and is now a reliever that will be one of our two lefties from the pen. New Orleans is covering 95% of his $6.3 million salary for this season and he is due to be a free agent at the end of the 2025 season.
