May 17-19, 2058: vs Minnesota (3)

Game 1: Tampa Bay jumped out to an 8-1 lead before holding on to top the Twins 8-6 in the series opener at Publix Park. Jalen Diaz had his best came this year, going 3-4 with 3 RBI, including a 2-run homer (#1) in the 3rd and Angel Gonzales was 3-5 with 2 RBI. Julio Mattila (3-2) was cruising with the lead until he gave up 3 in the 6th and finished 5.1 5 4 4 2 1 and it was 8-4 going into the 9th when Jake Cid gave up homers to the first two batters on the 9th and needed rescuing by Devin Tadlock, who retired the next three men for his 5th save.

Game 2: The Rays wasted a fine outing from Dave Rose as they dropped a 3-2 decision to Minnesota. Rose went 7 5 2 2 2 6 but left the game with the score tied before Jake Cid (3-4) picked up where he left off yesterday and gave up a game-deciding solo homer in the 8th. Orlando Diaz had a solo homer (#7) for Tampa Bay.

Game 3: Tampa Bay took the rubber game from Minnesota 7-4. Tony Guzman (4-2) was outstanding again at 5.1 5 1 1 2 7 and was supported by big hits from Jesus Avalos (a 2-run triple) and Rodrigo Aponte (a 2-run homer, his 6th) with Jalen Diaz also contributing a 2-run single. Once again the bullpen made it closer than it should have been with Randy Mastropietro giving up 3 runs in the 8th necessitating Bill Sutherland to pitch the 9th for save #12.

Team record: 29-18
. The Yankees lost 2 of 3 so the Rays' division lead increases to 2 1/2 games. Next up: off to Atlanta for 3 games.
