July 16-19: All-Star Break.

July 20: vs Cleveland 0-1 L. LP-McGee (10-5, 5.2 4 1 1 2 10). A first-inning Guardian run stood up and Will Warren and a reliever held the Rays to a mere two hits as the offensive slump continued, leading to a season-high 6 straight losses.

July 21: vs Cleveland 12-3 W. WP-Horton (4-2). Starter-Sheehan (4.2 5 3 3 3 7). HR-Cermak 2 (21), J.Ramos (10). Finally some offense, and finally a win! Ramos was 4-5 with his homer and 3 RBI, Cermak had a pair of solo homers, and Keegan and Westburg each knocked in 3. Horton went 4.1 1 0 0 1 6 in relief for the win.

Transaction: Optioned OF Luis Lara to AAA Durham, recalled IF Brayden Taylor. Despite gaudy minor league numbers Lara just didn't hit with the big club (170/222/191) and Parker Meadows will be back soon. Taylor gives the team some more infield flexibility.

July 22: vs Cleveland 5-6 L. LP-H.Smith (8-5, 5.1 6 5 5 4 7). HR-Cermak (22). Back in the loss column again after Smith gave up a 2-run homer in the 6th to break a 3-3 tie and although Cermak's 2-run shot in the 8th got them back within one it was as close as they'd get.

Team record: 60-41. The once-formidable division lead which flirted with double digits not that long ago is down to 1 1/2 over Baltimore. Next week: An off-day then those same Orioles visit for 3 big games followed by the Angels for 3 more. The time to turn things back around is now.

AL: Caleb Bonemer (BOS), 7-12, 1 HR, 5 RBI
NL: CJ Abrams (WAS), 7-14, 1 HR, 4 RBI

MLB News: Baltimore may be red-hot and breathing down the Rays' collective neck but they lost starter (and former Rays farmhand) Seth Johnson to a torn UCL. Johnson was a solid 9-6, 3.35 and will be missed.
