May 20-22, 2058: at Atlanta (3)

Game 1: Elijah Whitaker pitched his second straight strong start after a poor beginning to the season, leading the Rays to a 5-1 win in Atlanta. Whitaker (3-2) went 6 4 1 1 1 6 for the victory and he was backed by three homers: a solo shot for Orlando Diaz (#8), a 2-run jack from Rodrigo Aponte (#7) and a bases-empty blast from Jalen Diaz (#2).

May 21: Activated OF Joel Bland from the 10-day IL, optioned OF Jordan Sailes to AAA Durham.

This was about as tough a demotion as I've ever had to make as Sailes has done nothing but rake since being recalled to replace Bland a little over a month ago, hitting 356/416/689 with 8 HR in 90 AB. But defense took priority as with Henry Dominguez out, Jalen Diaz is the only credible LH-batting CF on the roster so he gets to say (plus Diaz has been red-hot at the plate of late himself).

Game 2
: The Rays fought all the way back to tie the game after falling behind 6-2 but still ended up losing 7-6 to Atlanta in 11 innings in a frustrating affair which saw them leave 14 men on base. Victor Boria had his first bad start of the season, going 5 8 6 6 0 4 with 3 homers allowed, but kept his perfect record intact when Rodrigo Aponte delivered a game-tying RBI single in the 8th. The team amassed 16 hits and drew 6 walks, but kept failing to come through with men on base despite the 6 runs including a bases-loaded, nobody-out situation they squandered in the top of the 11th and then Joe Rose (4-2) gave up an RBI double in the bottom of the frame to lose it. Angel Gonzales had a first-inning 2-run homer (#11).

Game 3: More heartache for the Rays as they were walked off for the second straight night as Atlanta scored in the bottom of the 9th to take a 5-4 win. Like last night they came back to tie (twice, from 3-1 and 4-3 down) only to suffer defeat. They got another lousy start from Julio Mattila (4.1 7 3 3 1 3) and Devin Tadlock (2-2) took the loss after giving up a leadoff triple in the bottom of the 9th which scored on a sac fly. Joel Bland did hit a solo homer (#2) and has five hits in the two games since his return from the IL.

Team record: 30-20
. Luckily for the Rays the Yankees were even worse, swept in their 3-game series so the division lead actually increased to 3 1/2 games.
