June 4-7, 2040: at Boston (4)

Back in September 1978 the Yankees famously went into Fenway Park and swept the Red Sox in a four-game series by the combined score of 42-9 to erase a 4-game deficit in the AL East. The series famously came to be known as the "Boston Massacre". Well 62 years later the stakes weren't quite as high but the Rays came to Fenway and committed Boston Massacre 2.0, sweeping the Red Sox by a combined score of 38-13 with only the final game a close one (and that one was 5-1 in the 8th inning).

The Rays kicked the series off by going up 10-0 by the 3rd inning and coasting to a 12-5 win over Boston. Melvin Olvera's 2-run double and Danny Rivera's 2-run homer (#9) made it 4-0 right off the bat and Billy Doughty started his big day with a solo shot (#6) in the 2nd and the followed that up with a bases-clearing double in a 5-run 3rd as he finished with a four-hit day. Tony Fisher added a 2-run homer (#6). All this made things easy for Ruben Cerrillo (6-1), who went 7 7 3 3 1 6 for the win.

Tampa Bay romped in the second game 10-3, although it wasn't as easy as the game was only 1-0 through 5 and they lost starter Sergio Espinoza to a partially torn labrum in the 3rd inning. A 5-run 6th keyed by Justin Blackwell's bases-clearing double broke it open, and Ray Green added a 3-run jack in the 9th (#3). Victor Gonzalez got the Rays on the board in the 2nd with a solo shot (#12). Espinoza's exit after going 2.2 2 0 0 0 2 led to a bullpen game and Moises Baca (3-1), the first of three relievers, got the win.

Transactions: He's back! All-everything SS Jeremy Begley was activated after a couple of rehab games at Durham. To make room, Luis Solarzano was optioned to Durham. The young IF is a real talent, but he maybe isn't quite ready yet after hitting 183/283/231 filling in for Begley. Also AL win leader Sergio Espinoza will miss two months with his partially torn labrum and Sebastian Burns, who was in our pen all of last season as a Rule 5 guy but whose future is as a starter, will take Espinoza's spot after pitching well in the Durham rotation.

Jeremy Begley announced his return to the top of the MLB pecking order by homering in his first two at-bats after missing a little over a month with injury, leading the Rays to another rout of the Red Sox 11-1. Begley led off the game with homer #9 and added his 10th in the 3rd inning as part of a 4-hit triumphant return. Also going yard twice was Victor Gonzalez (#13 & 14), who also doubled and drove in 4 runs. Danny Morales (5-7) decided to look like his classic self, going 6 5 1 1 0 6 for the win and Chris Ericson pitched 3 scoreless for his first save.

The Rays completed the sweep in a much tighter affair than the previous three games, holding on to beat Boston 5-4. Sebastian Burns (2-0) was outstanding in his first game in the regular rotation, going 5.2 4 1 1 2 7 but Stephen Farrior served up a 3-run homer in the 8th to make it a nail-biter. No problem though once again for Eric Lewis in the 9th, who got the Sox in order on 7 pitches in the 9th for his 11th save. Danny Rodriguez had a solo homer (#14) and yesterday's heroes Jeremy Begley and Victor Gonzalez each drove in a run.

Team record: 41-19
. Not only did the Rays sweep their series, the Yankees were swept in a 3-game set and suddenly the division lead has ballooned to five games. Next up: Back home against Baltimore, which had won 10 straight before losing their last two.
