Explain this one
I have a one subleague random debut league with 2 9 team divisions. The 2 division winners make the post season and three other teams make the post season as wild card teams. The second and third wild card teams meet in a best of 3 series with all games played in the 2nd wild cards stadium.
Just finished the 1983 season. The Tulsa Drillers and the San Antonio Mission finished the season with 91-71 records, tied for the first wild card. Meanwhile, the Memphis Redbirds and the Great Lakes Loons finished with 89-73, tied for the third wild card.
So, a game 163 was scheduled between Memphis and Great Lakes to decide the third wild card winner. Memphis got the win.
The thing I don't quite understand is, there was no game 163 scheduled to break the tie between Tulsa and San Antonio. Instead it looks like the game simply used the head to head standings, awarding Tulsa the top spot and assigning San Antonio the second wild card.
Just wondering why the game would use a tie breaker game to determing one slot, but not the other?
