August 6-12, 2029
Transaction: Carson Williams suffered a strained hamstring and will be out 6-7 weeks. The SS will be back just in time for the playoffs and to replace him we recalled the wonderfully-named Concetto Federico Bailey, a SS we took in the 5th round a couple of years ago from the University of Houston. Like Williams Bailey is a plus-plus defender with an iffy bat but decent pop, he was hitting a robust 293/390/629 with 15 HR in 167 AB but I don't expect anything like that in the bigs.
August 6: Off-Day.
August 7: at NY Yankees 4-5 L. LP-McGee (12-6, 5 3 4 4 2 9). HR-Westburg (14), Caminero (19). A strange game in which the two teams combined for only eight hits, but five of them were homers and the Rays came out on the short end of the stick.
August 8: at NY Yankees 2-0 W. WP-Sheehan (9-5, 6 3 0 0 3 10). HR-Caminero 2 (21). S-Klein (28). Sheehan was absolutely dominant and Caminero's pair of homers were all he and the Rays needed on offense.
August 9: at NY Yankees 5-4 W. WP-Mercedes (3-2). S-Klein (29). Starter-H.Smith (4.2 5 4 4 2 8). Smith gave up four runs in the first but settled down and that enabled the Rays to win it with a four-spot of their own in the 5th. Isaac was 3-3 with 3 RBI including a 2-run single in that 5th and Cermak's 2-run single in the same inning was the difference.
August 10: vs Houston 8-2 W. WP-Hennen (5-0). S-Maldonado (3). Starter-Bradley (4.1 4 2 2 4 6). HR-Montes (22), Cermak 2 (28), Isaac (24). Don't be fooled by the final score - this was a 4-2 game until the Rays broke it open with 4 in the 8th inning. Cermak drove in 3 with his two homers to lead the offense.
August 11: vs Houston 5-2 W. WP-Kim (2-0). S-Klein (30). Starter-Witt (5.1 5 1 1 2 4). HR-Cermak 2 (30). Cermak had his second straight two-homer game and the second was a 3-run shot in the 8th to win it, breaking a 2-2 tie.
Transaction: Our infielders are dropping like flies as now Junior Caminero will be lost for a month with a strained rib cage muscle. It's been a down season for our star 3B (252/319/439 and on track for only 2.4 WAR after 12 combined the last two seasons) and he seemed to be heating up right before the injury. Veteran Eloy Jimenez had his contract purchased from Durham and he'll DH against lefties with Cade Doughty covering 3B.
August 12: vs Houston 4-0 W. WP-McGee (13-6, 6 2 0 0 1 10). HR-Isaac (25). McGee was nearly unhittable and Isaac added a 2-run homer as the Rays swept the Astros and completed an impressive 5-1 week.
Team record: 74-45. The division lead has grown to 8 games and we're thankful for it given the injuries to key players like Williams and Caminero this week. Next week: We hit the road with 3 in Seattle and 3 in Milwaukee sandwiched around an off-day.
Players of the Week:
AL: Rafael Devers (BOS), 11-26, 4 HR, 17(!) RBI
NL: Elly De La Cruz (CIN), 12-25, 6 HR, 10 RBI, including a 3-homer game
Thought Cermak might have a shot at AL PotW after an 8-23, 4 HR, 10 RBI week but Devers deserved it.
MLB News: Texas IF Corey Seager belted career homer #300.
