MERION CONQUERS INDEPENDENCE IN PCBL MASSACRE
HOSTS RACK UP ALMOST TWO DOZEN RUNS IN CRUSHING SHUTOUT VICTORY AT CHESWOLD LANE

PHILADELPHIA (June 5, 1878) - Independence & Merion B.C.C. started their P.C.B.L. Week Five series on Wednesday, and Merion hammered Independence at the Cheswold Lane Cricket Grounds:

The scoring tap opened for Merion right away, with the hosts scoring three times in B1. After a scoreless 2nd the hosts put ten runs across the plate over the next three innings to make it a 13-0 game. Then, in B7 Merion sent ten men across the plate to turn a laugher into a slaughter.

The pitcher of Merion’s Shutout was their new #1, Henry Brown…
MBCC P Henry Brown: CG SHO (6-2, 2.40), 3 HA, 2 BB, 5 K
…and numerous Merion batsmen had excellent days at the plate.
MBCC 1B William Kniffen: 3/6 (2B), 1 R, 1 RBI
MBCC RF Clifford Martin: 5/6 (2B), 5 R, 2 RBI
MBCC 3B Enos Pfannenstiel: 4/6 (all 1B), 5 R, 1 RBI, SB
MBCC LF Francis Stickrod: 3/6 (2B), 2 R, 3 RBI, 1 K
MBCC CF Wallace Wagner: 5/6 (3B, HR), 2 R, 4 RBI, 10 TB
Wagner’s Home Run wasn’t the only one by a Merion batsman, His two-run blast in the opening was preceded by a solo Home Run from Merion leadoff man William Edmonds, giving Merion a rare two-homer inning to open the game.

The 23-run win allowed 13-8 Merion to keep with West leaders Overbrook, who are one game ahead of them. Independence is 9-12, tied for 6th in West Philadelphia and five games behind Overbrook.
