2022 Three-Quarter Pole – Stats Update
We're in the home stretch now, with only 40 games left. Here's how the stats & awards races are shaping up in the EL:
Batting race:
Peku Karwo (ASPI, 1B): .372
Solo Sipet (NAT, CF): .358
Rolupi Shekesu (SIT, 3B): .345
Sipet's batting pace fell off in Q3 while Karwo's average actually increased, and the Spirits' 1B now leads the league in all three of the slash line categories. Sipet is second in all three as well. It's easy for me to forget because these guys are mostly names on a screen, but both of these guys are still teenagers!
Home runs:
Rolana Rekesu (ASPI, 3B): 51
Lope Shosotsoke (MIT, LF): 44
Ilye Nofetso (LUT, 1B): 43
Rekesu led the league in homers in 2019 and 2021, and looks to be right on pace to tie his career high of 68 (2018 and 2019). Shosotsoke continues to be the brightest bright spot in a relegation-likely Mithazni team, though his young teammate Pokoni Merefife ranks fourth on this same list with 40 bombs.
RBI:
Somp Awia (OAKS, 1B): 125
Rolana Rekesu (ASPI, 3B): 123
Ilye Nofetso (LUT, 1B): 119
Fumiecho Sahiu (SIT, 3B): 119
In his first EL season, Awia is reaping the benefits of batting in the middle of such a star-studded lineup. Interestingly, he's a switch-hitter with a massive platoon split - he might be even better if he stuck to batting left-handed only.
Position player WAR:
Nekafe Natso (KEP, SS): 9.3
Sawita Pichake (XEAG, 2B): 8.1
Lawori El (ZAP, 2B): 8.1
Anesa Mikesash (NAT, SS): 8.1
There's quite a logjam of other players in the 7.7-8.0 range as well, so the MVP race is definitely wide open. Natso was 2nd at the halfway point to his teammate Kala Koshynae, who has fallen back to the pack. Is he the MVP this year? It doesn't really feel like it, without any chart-topping numbers and on the 7th place team, but finding a new offensive level while being a great defensive SS is definitely valuable.
Stolen bases:
Sawita Pichake (XEAG, 2B): 75
Ketso Kofmi (CEX, SS): 64
Lawori El (ZAP, 2B): 61
Pichake has blown past his career high of 46 steals, without a real obvious underlying cause - he's near his usual OBP, for example. Maybe he's being more aggressive to account for how bad the rest of the Eagles' lineup has been.
ERA:
Notsimi Feshasu (OAKS): 2.40
Tupae Epofemi (ZAP): 2.75
Santa Ketitu (NAT): 2.77
Wins:
Notsimi Feshasu (OAKS): 21-2
Santa Ketitu (NAT): 15-6
Talese Yelishike (OAKS): 14-0
Lomunu Awia (ZAP): 14-6
Pilau Rima (CEX): 14-7
Feshasu is no longer undefeated, but still looks to be lapping the field for the Pitcher of the Year race. Ketitu is the hot hand, having rebounded from a slow start to win 13 of his last 15 decisions. Yelishike's 14-0 record is eye-popping, but he benefits from having an opener pitch in front of him - several of his wins have been recorded with less than 5 innings pitched!
Saves:
Akawo Nylur (ZAP): 46
Autsu Sikiura (OAKS): 40
Uteuche Rolei (KEP): 40
Nylur has made 25 appearances since the last stats update, and in that time he's recorded 20 saves, to go along with two wins, two holds, and no blown saves at all (making him 46-47 in save opportunities for the season). If you're trailing Tsapna in the 9th inning, things don't look good.
Strikeouts:
Notsimi Feshasu (OAKS): 198
Tsarase Roshoshe (AKAU): 190
Laotso Tirionu (AMN): 189
Roshoshe is weirdly ineffective for a guy with this many Ks, though maybe not when you look at the big upticks in his HR/9 and BB/9 this year. Amnanache usually has a guy on this list, as they seem to prioritize these fireballers with nasty stuff, and Tirionu has been that guy the last couple of years. He leads the league in K/9, but has thrown fewer innings than the other two guys on this list. For his part, Feshasu has thrown 18 more innings than anyone else in the Elite League, on top of his other accolades.
Pitcher WAR:
Santa Ketitu (NAT): 6.8
Notsimi Feshasu (OAKS): 6.2
Tsai Reyolafa (AMN): 4.8
And yet, Ketitu is the leader in WAR at the moment. It seems to be because Feshasu has quite a big gap between his ERA and FIP, nearly a full run, while Ketitu's FIP is actually lower than his ERA. In the more backward-looking rWAR, Feshasu has a two-win gap ahead of the field.

The top two teams here are all but guaranteed to play in the Elite League in 2023, which is a first for Meka - they are a real Cinderella story, having risen up from tier 8, gradually, over the past couple of decades. Muni (Shunna Municipal) will return after being relegated last year, while the race for the third promotion spot is looking pretty wild. Semyof are 7-time Elite League champions who have fallen on hard times lately, while Nokir also have a title from 1996. Of the teams in contention, it's the current 3rd-place team, Tishmin, who have been outside the EL the longest, not playing in the top flight since 2012 and dropping to the Northern Premier League from 2017-19. It would be nice to have more teams from the south in the EL, so I'd pull for either Tishmin or Nokir, but I do have a soft spot for the Canaries as well.

Yasral and Sunoki, both hailing from the nation's largest city of Ransu, now occupy the two promotion places from the NPL. Weirdly, only 7 of the 20 clubs in this league have ever played in the Second League before, and that doesn't include any of the current top 3. Moonside comes from Rupakare, the same island state that is home to Akashemo United; Moonside is the primary team representing the city of Eroha, which is north of Akashemo.

Fese's league championship is all but locked up; they would have a chance at promotion even if they went 0-40 to close the year. A run of four straight promotions from 2016-19 brought this team out of obscurity, and now they're headed for even greater heights. Meanwhile, the Hefem Rangers are in danger of dropping to the fourth tier for the first time ever. They've previously finished as high as 5th in the EL.

Tiers 9-11:
Down in the state leagues, there's too much to report on, with over 500 teams trying things out down there. The best record in a state league currently belongs to Lokile BC (33-3) in the Efiro state league, a team that was just relegated from the Southern League last year. To be promoted back, they would need one of the four Efiro-based teams in this year's Southern League to finish last, but luckily, one of those teams is currently in last place. Time will tell.
The worst team in the state leagues, and thus, the worst team in Lokasi, appears to be the Pale Eagles from Pale, Talor, who have been the nation's worst team at both pitching and defense, averaging about 11 runs against per game to this point to the tune of a 4-32 record. I feel somewhat bad for their one player on what would be a full-time salary, LF Ruol Apylsho, who could be playing at a much higher level than this.
