It took eight innings, but the U.S. team pounded out nine runs in the bottom of the eighth to break a 1-1 tie to put Britain away by a 10-1 score. Jacob deGrom struck out eight over seven innings, while Devin Williams rebounded from his rough outing two nights ago against the Mexican squad with two scoreless innings, facing the minimum while fanning three.
"A bit close for comfort, but it was good to see us put the game away late," said Mark DeRosa, skippering the American team. "The pitching did it's thing, biding time until the offense came around, and it did in a big way."
In other action, the Japanese edged out South Korea by a 3-2 score, with Masataka Yoshida hitting a two-out, two-run homer in the eighth to propel them to victory in that matchup. Shumpei Yoshikawa, who hasn't pitched in organized baseball since 2023, gave Japan an excellent performance on the mound, striking out seven in seven frames.
Puerto Rico came back from their extra-inning defeat to Canada with an extra-inning win over Panama, winning 4-3 in a dozen innings. Edwin Diaz picked up the win, pitching scoreless innings in the 11th and 12th with three strikeouts and no baserunners.
