Cards news: May 8 -- Injuries will sideline starter Fernandez and reliever Hentges
The St. Louis Cardinals have learned that starting pitcher Ignacio Fernandez and relief pitcher Sam Hentges for a substantial amount of time.
Fernandez, 22, was enjoying a very good start to his season before he suffered a strained hamstring while pitching in what would be a 4-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on May 6.
The right-hander is expected to be out for two to three months.
In his first seven starts of the season, Fernandez had gone 3-1 with a 2.25 ERA.
An off-season signing by St. Louis, the 37-year-old Hentges had pitched in 10 games going 1-0 with a 4.82 ERA before suffering a torn flexor tendon in his elbow in a 10-2 victory over Pittsburgh on May 7.
Hentges is expected to miss the rest of the season.
Both players have been placed on the 60-day injured list.
