May 23

Things took a better turn this week, with the Phillies taking four of six (though both the losses were blowouts) and improving to 24-20.

May 16: Expos 14, Phillies 5. Curt Schilling gave up two first-inning runs, but the Phillies came back to take the lead with four of their own. It didn't last, as the bullpen was obliterated for ten runs in three innings. The Expos hit five home runs in total.

May 17: Phillies 4, Expos 2. Charlie Hough was effective in his first start with Philadelphia, allowing two runs in 6 1/3 innings. The late-game troika of David West, Larry Andersen and Doug Jones held the Expos scoreless the rest of the way. Ricky Jordan's two-run homer was the big hit for the Phils.

May 18: Phillies 5, Expos 2. Jordan homered again, this time as a pinch hitter, and Pete Incaviglia hit one as well to pace the Phillies' offense. Jeff Juden was effective over five innings, and the bullpen had another good day.

May 20: Phillies 6, Mets 2. The Phillies struck early, with three runs in the first, and Lenny Dykstra extended the lead with a homer in the second. Tommy Greene gutted through five innings, and yet again, the bullpen held the opposition scoreless the rest of the way.

May 21: Phillies 7, Mets 6 (11 innings). This was an impressive comeback win for the Phillies. Down 5-1 after the top of the fifth, with Curt Schilling getting hit hard once again, the Phils tied it up with four of their own in the bottom of the inning. After trading late-inning runs, an exhausted bullpen carried the club into extras. Jim Eisenreich hit a single to end it.

May 22: Mets 7, Phillies 0. Bobby Jones held the Phillies to just two hits, throwing 139 pitches in the process. Hough took the loss, with Todd Hundley and Bobby Bonilla hitting homers for the Mets.

Danny Jackson's recovery took longer than expected, so he went to the IL and Bobby Munoz was recalled to replace him in the rotation.
