Oakland, CA — The Oakland Athletics (2-5) rallied late and defeated the Boston Red Sox (5-2) 4–3 in 11 innings Wednesday night at Oakland Coliseum. The game ended dramatically when Oakland first baseman Zack Gelof (HR 1) crushed a solo home run in the bottom of the 11th inning, giving the Athletics the victory. Gelof had just one plate appearance but made it count with the walk-off blast.
Oakland collected 12 hits, led by designated hitter Darell Hernaiz, who went 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Third baseman Jake Burger added two hits and an RBI, while second baseman Jacob Wilson (HR 1) connected for a solo homer earlier in the game. Boston received a strong performance from third baseman Rafael Devers (HR 2), who hit a sixth-inning solo home run and scored twice. Infielder Tommy Edman chipped in three hits, including a double and triple, as the Red Sox finished with nine hits.
Athletics starter JP Sears allowed one earned run on five hits and one walk over six innings while striking out 6; Game Score 62. Relievers Trevor Martin and Mason Miller covered the next 2 2/3 innings before turning the ball over to reliever Kyle Muller (2-0) who earned the win after pitching the final 2⅓ innings. Boston starter Logan Gilbert went 5⅓ innings in which he permitted two earned runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out six batters; Game Score 49. Jack Leiter kept his team in the game with 3 2/3 innings, seeing just one unearned run scored. Closer Liam Hendriks (0-1) took the loss after surrendering Gelof’s game-winning homer.
