Profar appeals year-long suspension; Colorado's Julien added to injured list

03/31 -- Braves' Profar facing year-long suspension after PED test: Atlanta could be facing the prospect of playing without Jurickson Profar again, this time for the remainder of the 2026 season. For the second time in as many seasons, Profar tested positive for a banned substance under the CBA's provisions, which will now sideline him for an entire season's worth of games that will stretch briefly into 2027.
The 33-year-old outfielder has appealed the decision, which will allow him to continue playing for the time being, but it is very unlikely that the decision will be overturned by the league. If it is upheld, similar to 2025, his remaining $15 million salary will be voided for the rest of the season, and a small portion of his 2027 salary as well should they retain him.
After sitting out a half-season last year, he now faces a lifetime ban with another strike upon his return.
He's owed roughly $30 million through the end of the 2027 season, which is not small change. Through his first two games, Profar is 2-for-8 with a homerun, a walk, and two runs scored as the Braves won the first two games of their opening home series with Kansas City by a combined 13-8 score.
03/31 -- Rockies place Julien on injured list: Acquired from the Twins early in the offseason, Colorado placed first baseman Eduardo Julien (hand) on the 10-day IL after getting hit in the hand by a pitch on Sunday. Manager Warren Schaeffer speculated he'd be "out a month or so", but broken hands and/or fingers can be tricky, especially since the surgery that Julien had involved putting pins in the bones to help facilitate healing.
T.J. Rumfield, who was acquired from the Yankees' organization for reliever Angel Chivilli, was re-called to make his MLB debut this week in place of Julien. His first few games have not gone very well, going 0-for-7 with a walk and three strikeouts.
"There will be plenty of at-bats available for him, so we'll get a nice, long look at him while he's up with us," Schaeffer said of his new first baseman. "There's a lot to like with his size and raw power, it's just working on just refining some of the rougher edges of his game. He's also advanced defensively for his experience level, so there won't be much of a drop-off there."
Colorado is in a tie for first place with the Dodgers, boasting a 4-2 record entering play today. Their thirteen homeruns rank first in all of baseball, which isn't a huge surprise given they have some solid power hitters, such as Hunter Goodman, Mickey Moniak, and Ezequiel Tovar, who each have topped twenty homeruns at least once in the last two seasons; but they've done all of their offensive damage on the road to this point with series at Miami and Toronto.
"Colorado's floor is certainly higher than it was last year," said one unnamed NL executive. "I don't think that means they are going to be playoff contenders or anything like that, but they have some real major league guys on that roster, and that's a credit to the new front office they've brought in that has overhauled their staff and re-evaluated some of their guys that the outgoing staff over-valued, if we're being honest."
04/02 -- Dodgers' Freeland day-to-day: The Dodgers are keeping an eye on infielder Alex Freeland (quad), who they are opting to not put on the injured list after he has reportedly been dealing with that over the past few days. He's played in just two games, logging fourteen innings at third base starting against left-handed pitching. They also have Miguel Rojas on the roster, as he also has some recent third base experience, having logged 141 innings at the position a year ago.
But manager Dave Roberts noted that even with the injury, Freeland offers a bit more athleticism than the veteran Rojas, and they continue to want to try and develop him further on the big-league roster since he's already been very successful at the Triple-A level in his career, posting an .802 OPS in over 700 plate appearances there.
"It's something that we'll continue to monitor, but right now it's not an injury that's limiting him too much to where we think we have to shut him down for a while," Roberts explained. "Obviously, that can change, but we'll continue to employ him in certain spots and we really like his speed and athleticism off the bench."
