Red Sox, Reds Swap Players

The Boston Red Sox and Cincinnati Reds completed a modest but potentially meaningful early-season trade; swapping a mix of major league experience and minor league upside. The reported details have Boston acquiring a trio of 23-year old minor league prospects in left fielder Ethan O’Donnell, third baseman Yohandy Morales, and first baseman Jack Moss, along with an 11th-round draft pick. In turn, moving to Cincinnati are 29-year-old first baseman Bobby Dalbec, 27-year-old minor league center fielder Victor Robles, and 25-year-old left fielder Allan Cerda.

For Boston, I saw this as opportunity to move Dalbec (who was not going to see time at major league level) and Cerda (who I just picked up as minor-league free agent) without any impact to the Organization. Trading Robles was a little tougher, as he is an outstanding defensive outfielder with tremendous speed. Because the Red Sox outfield is already crowded, I saw this trade as acceptable but still caused me to feel a tinge of regret once executed. In return, I pick up decent prospects and an additional draft pick selection. Overall, the trade save Boston approximately $5.4M. I received feedback from my Assistant General Manager that "I don't have a strong opinion about this deal, one way or the other."
