August 6-9, 2040: vs Baltimore (4)

Although the teams scored the same number of runs over the 4-game series the Rays took a trio of low-scoring affairs to win it.

Baltimore did win the opener 7-3 as Brad Paquette's struggles continued. The righty, whose pitching was a highlight of the first half, has hit a bit of a wall and after today's 4.2 7 5 5 2 2 outing he's allowed 17 runs over 20 innings in his last 4 starts and dropped to 8-7.

The Rays were staring down the barrel of a second straight loss to the Orioles, down 1-0 heading into the bottom of the 9th before they scored twice in the bottom of the 9th to win 2-1, with the decider coming on Willie Maldonado's pinch-hit RBI single. Leo Gutierrez was excellent at 7 3 1 1 1 7 but looked like a hard-luck loser before the 9th-inning magic. Tiku Kadare won his first Rays decision after pitching a scoreless 8th and 9th.

It was 9th-inning walk-off mania at the Trop for a second straight night as backup catcher Sondre Nielsen, pressed into action with Billy Doughty nursing a hamstring, delivered an RBI single to give Tampa Bay a 3-2 win over Baltimore. The Rays had taken a 2-0 lead but saw the lead disappear after Danny Morales (5.2 6 1 1 1 4) gave up a run in the 6th and Stephen Farrior allowed the equalizer in the 7th. Eric Lewis (2-1) picked up the win.

Transaction: Tony Fisher, once a cornerstone of the lineup but who's suffered through an ineffective (214/313/405) and injury-plagued season, will try to salvage the remainder of it as he comes off the IL and Willie Maldonado is optioned to Durham.

The Rays rode a pair of two-run homers to a 4-2 win to take the finale and the series from the Orioles. After Justin Blackwell belted a 2-run blast (#13) in the 5th only to see Baltimore tie with a pair in the top of the 6th, Melvin Olvera responded in the bottom of the frame with a 2-run shot of his own (#15) which provided the winning margin. Ruben Cerrillo (12-5) was a solid 6 5 2 2 2 4 for the win and Jose Rodriguez picked up his first Rays save after 23 with Miami before coming over before the deadline. In fact he and Tiku Kadare, who pitched the 7th and 8th, have combined to go 18.2 5 0 0 4 23 since coming over in that trade with J-Rod an untouchable 9 1 0 0 0 14.

Team record: 79-35. Next up: The White Sox visit for 3 games.
