Not a great week for Lane State's East-West Classic hopes but through no fault of their own. They took care of business against last place Spokane State with a 27-0 victory keyed by a pair of Jerry Lewis touchdown passes and 152 yards receiving for Drew Osteen.

However, they did not gain any ground on Northern Cal or Redwood as both won and remain a game ahead of the Emeralds. This weekend is key as Lane State travels to Sacramento to face the Northern California Miners. Their loss to Redwood earlier in the season means the Emeralds will need to beat Northern Cal and hope Redwood loses the following week to the Miners which would set up a 3-way tie for top spot in the WCAA. Lane State is at Portland Tech for their finale in two weeks.

Lane State has not played in the East-West Classic since their 20-13 win over Central Ohio to conclude the 1962 season. That was their most recent New Year's appearance, and they finished a modern day (post-1940) school record 5th in the final rankings. Lane State has never lost an East-West Classic. They are 2-0-1 with a 1941 victory over Eastern State in a game played at New York's Bigsby Garden because of the attack on Pearl Harbor and in their only other appearance - the 1939 game- they tied national champion Noble Jones College 14-14.

On the hardwood where Lane State has excelled recently winning back-to-back AIAA tournaments in 1972 and 1973, the Emeralds opened their season with a pair of games last week. Unranked, they dropped their opener 62-60 on the road in Arizona to Flagstaff State last Thursday but had a much better outcome in the home opener Saturday against Idaho A&M. Senior guard Scott Middleton had 29 points and junior forward Phil Jenoure added 20 as the Emeralds spanked the Pirates 85-65.

Lane State's lone game this week sends them to Kentucky to face the Glasgow Scotsmen, who are 0-1 after losing to Constitution State in the opener of the Coaches Classic tournament last week.
