An up-and-down week leaves the Phillies at 27-23, three games back of the Expos in the NL East.

May 23: Phillies 13, Cardinals 10 (10 innings). John Kruk was the hero, hitting a three-run homer in the ninth to tie it, and then putting the Phillies ahead with a single in the tenth. This was a game that the Phillies led 7-1 heading into the bottom of the second inning, but Jeff Juden was rocked for six runs in that frame to allow the Cardinals to tie it up. Kruk, Mariano Duncan, Pete Incaviglia and Jim Eisenreich all had at least three hits.

May 24: Phillies 8, Cardinals 2. Lenny Dykstra had three hits and scored three runs as the Phils won going away. Tyler Green pitched six solid innings, and Andy Carter picked up a three-inning save in his major-league debut.

May 25: Cardinals 2, Phillies 1. Two second-inning runs of Tommy Greene proved enough for the Cards, who got 6 2/3 strong innings from Vicente Palacios.

May 27: Astros 4, Phillies 1. Curt Schilling pitched well, but was outdueled by the Astros' Pete Harnisch. Ed Taubensee and Ken Caminit homered for Houston.

May 28: Astros 5, Phillies 4 (10 innings). Mickey Morandini tied the game with a single in the ninth, but Steve Finley's hit off Doug Jones in the tenth put the Astros ahead again. Charlie Hough allowed four runs in five excruciatingly long innings, throwing 113 pitches.

May 29: Phillies 5, Astros 3. Tyler Green allowed two runs in six innings to pick up his second win. The bullpen group of Toby Borland, Larry Andersen and Doug Jones were solid the rest of the way. Darren Daulton hit his seventh home run.

Danny Jackson looks like he should return from injury this week to help out a thin rotation. We placed a waiver claim on Storm Davis, who has a 2.81 ERA but has walked more guys than he's struck out.
