Cards news: Nov. 4 -- RHP Ascanio and 1B Medina sent to Washington for OF prospect
The St. Louis Cardinals have traded right-handed pitcher Ali Ascanio and first baseman Jonathan Medina to the Washington Nationals in exchange for minor-league outfielder Juan Hernandez.
Ascanio, 30, split the 2034 season between AA Springfield and AAA Memphis going a combined 6-4 with a 5.47.
Once one of the Cardinals' top prospects, he got a chance to pitch in six games/five starts during the 2033 season going 3-2 with a 3.90 ERA.
But Ascanio failed to make the rotation out of spring training in 2034 and never displayed much in the minors in the coming campaign.
The 28-year-old Medina also split time between AA Springfield and AAA Memphis in 2034.
In 58 games, he hit .317 with five home runs and 15 RBIs.
Medina also had a major league stint during the 2033 season, but it lasted just five games during which he hit .091 with no homers or RBIs.
The 24-year-old Hernandez split the 2034 season between AAA Hartford and AAA Rochester.
In 114 games, he hit .305 with 21 home runs and 65 RBIs.
Originally signed out of the Dominican Republic by the Minnesota Twins and later traded to Washington.
Hernandez is a career .278 hitter in the minors with 44 home runs and 219 RBIs in 539 games/299 starts.
