Hitting the skids at home
The Smokers lost seven in a row at home and finally got a home victory to end what would have been a winless road trip. They went back home to Plant Field to face Fort Lauderdale in what was a unique series.
Fort Lauderdale (4/18-20)
4/18: FTL 5, TPA 4; W: Schupp (1-1), L: Lopez (0-1, BS 1), H: Dendinger (1); SV: Byrd (1), HR: FTL- Zaby (1); A- 586
The Smokers blew a lead in the 9th inning as a small team was left on base in the game, 24 between both sides. Tampa left 14 as Fort Lauderdale scored 3 to take a 9th inning lead and Tampa could not match.
4/19: FTL 4, TPA 4; BS: Harrington (1), HR: FTL- Sawatski (1); A- 535
The Smokers blew a 4-0 lead in the 9th inning thanks to Carl Sawatski's home run, but held a tie together through the 15th inning when the game ended due to the new rule that games end at that time.
4/20: FTL 5, TPA 3; W: Klingensmith (1-0), L: Reed (1-3), S: Zolinski (1); A- 448
Despite Fort Lauderdale starter Cy Buker walking 9 batters, the Smokers could not take advantage, with Fort Lauderdale scoring single runs in the 8th and 9th to leave the Smokers without a win in the series.
