von Homburg fought Light Heavyweight and Heavyweight in his career. In November 1966 he fought Piero Del Papa for the Eurpean Light Heavyweight Title. Del Papa went down in the 1st round of this fight, but then in the 11th round ahead on points, von Homburg was controversially disqualified for headbutting. In November 1968, he won a 10 round decision against Gerhard Zech in a German Heavyweight Title Eliminator bout. The bout was first ruled a draw, but changed to a decision for Wilhelm due to an error by the refree.
Some of von Homburg's noteable fights against rated fighters included wins against Bob McKinney, Ulli Ritter, and Archie McBride. He fought draws with Ulli Ritter, Archie McBride, and Erich Schoppner. He lost fights to Piero Tomasoni, Oscar Bonavena, and Jurgen Blin.
In January, February, and April, 1969 he fought 3 straight fights with Giulio Rinaldi. The first and third fights, Von Homburg won by TKO in the 5th and 8th rounds. The middle fight ended in a 10 round decision loss to Rinaldi.
