1967 Heavyweight and Light Heavyweight Replay
01/11/67 Wednesday
San Francisco, CA, USA
Memphis Al Jones – HW (2-8-2) vs. Jerry Quarry – HW (20-1-3)
Both of these fighters were in my data base. Quarry of course by the game company, Al Jones was the creation of Gunsmoke some time earlier in this heavyweight thread I believe. I've attached files with some bio info added to Quarry including all his fights and Gunsmoke's file included some good bio, I'll just reposted here for the heck of it.
The fight......
Quarry is coming off three consecutive wins over Bill Nielsen, Leslie Borden, and Joey Orbillo after having lost for the first time professionally back in July 1966 in a 10 round decision to veteran Eddie Machen. Jones is in the early stages of a yet not to successful career. He had lost his 5 previous fights to Bill Nielsen, Quarry, Joe Frazier, Orville Qualls and Ron Marsh most recently in November of 66. He went the full distance in a 10 rounder with Quarry back in May 1966 loosing a decision, so that earned him a chance at a rematch here in San Francisco. The scheduled 10 round here on this day in 1967 was not nearly as successful for Jones as Quarry dropped him right at the end of the 5th round and was counted out at 3:08.
I was looking forward to this replay and fighting Quarry for the first time. It was a grand success for Jerry, but, I bit of a disappointment for how short it lasted. Jerry comes out and quickly jolts Jones with an uppercut inside. Both fighters then paw away with little jabs before Quarry then gets a hook into Al’s exposed side. He then traps Al into his corner and connects again with the uppercut. After a volley of punches that miss their mark, Al misses with a jab but then scores with a follow up cross. Quarry counters with his own cross. Jones manages to land an uppercut but there’s not much on it. There’s bit of pause in the action a couple minutes into the round. Both fighters then exchange a few punches each not doing much with them. Then at the 2:31 mark Quarry lands a solid hook and suddenly Jones is in trouble. Quarry then smothers Jones with a barrage of punches and suddenly he’s down! The referee starts his count at the 2:52 mark and he’s counted out! Quarry with a 1st round KO!
