Game refuses to load

Somehow this evening both OOTP 2006 and 2007 refused to load. When I double click shortcuts for either one, the process starts up and shows up in the task manager for a few seconds, then disappears. Both programs worked fine earlier today.

Earlier, I had gotten an error about a dll file being missing or damaged (I think) when I was trying to open 2006. I can't remember what the DLL was, but i think it was of the form ms????##.dll, where ? are letters, and # are numbers. Numbers might have been '71'. The program opened fine, however. That session of OOTP 2006 closed without any errors. However, now I can't open either.

Running:
Vista Business
Dell Inspiron Laptop
2GB Ram
1.6 Centrino Duo

Did you check the suggestions here: http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...d.php?t=141264 ?

I'm currently re-installing OOTP 2007. I'll investigate that soon.

Saw this thread:

and followed those instructions. That made 2006 work. Not sure why I suddenly had to do it after 20 days of using it fine under Vista. There may be a hidden issue there.

Yeah, I'll bet one of those two threads will take care of you. Let us know!

Part of the "joys" of Vista, I suppose. Perhaps there was an issue with the new install of 2007, but I think after re-installing and then making sure that parameter is set, you'll be good to go.

Reinstalling 2007 made it work fine.

I then tried what I had done before (closing 2007, followed closely by opening 2006). That produced this error.

2006 opened and closed twice successfully after this error.

Tried to open 2007 again, got the same opens-for-a-second-then-closes problem.

Tried 2006 again, same issue as 2007.

Running 2007 as an administrator lets me load up that program fine. When I try to open up 2006, the process repeats itself.

It looks like there is an issue with both versions of OOTP not playing nicely with regards to that DLL.

I get the same error if I try to run 2006 while 2007 is running. That's something that should be looked at, because I'm in online leagues that use both, and I would like to be able to open both without restriction.

Another interesting note: I can open and close 2007 as much as I want, but as soon as I open 2006, the error gets thrown.

DEP is only on for essential Windows programs and services.

Yeah, that's by design. We want you playing 2007.

Hmm...perhaps a Vista ownership issue between the two apps sharing the same .DLL file.

I don't have Vista myself, so I can't really add too much, but it seems that the additional security "features" of Vista is causing this one.

Then you are truly evil. Seriously, though, this should be supported. I don't care if I can't sim both OOTPs at the same time very efficiently, but I should at least be able to look at two different leagues in two different programs.

This is definitely a Vista anomaly - I have OOTP2006 and 2007 running fine on the same XP PC.

Interesting. I hope this is something that is fixable, either by patch, or by giving each OOTP its own DLL file or something.

Running 2007 in Admin mode allows me to run 2007 and 2006 at the same time, but that's kind of annoying. Maybe this can go as a minor fix/Vista compatibility project, as more and more people move to Vista.
