Will you be the one to lead the Badgers past the mighty Sandgnats?

It seems like the Badgers have always been playing bridesmaid to Crystal Lake's bride. Despite a superlative 361-287 all-time franchise record, the Badgers have only been to the playoffs once (the 100-win '07 club made it in as a wild card). Try as they might, they just haven't quite been able to dethrone the Sandgnats as kings of the Great Lakes division. Now their initial window may be closing. Wins have been harder and harder to come by after that 100-win '07 season, and the team posted their first losing record (80-82) last year. The question now: Take another shot at the Gnats with what's on hand or blow the team up and start building for the future?

The decision is made tougher by presence of some potent weapons. Slugging 1B John Collins deservedly made his first All-Star appearance last year, a season in which he clubbed 34 HR and knocked in 104 RBI. Steady producer Brett Hurst would see his value increase enormously if trusted to play 2B, something the club waffled on last year for the first time. 3B Henry O'Halloran had a breakout season power-wise last year; now if only he can hit above .240! Maybe the greatest excitement for Badgers fans in '10 was generated when star prospect Joel Swedlove was called up mid-season. Sadly, his big league debut didn't live up to the hype, but he remains a bright hope for the future. Much further away from contributing but still highly promising are 1B River Adkins and Malaysian-born LF Ming-feng Sima.

Starting pitching has always been Kalamazoo's biggest strength. The staff isn't quite as strong as in previous years but still boasts an ace in 25-year-old Er Hang and a bona fide #2 man in José Chávez. Pat Paige and Geoff James both took steps backwards last year, although Paige still has a potentially dominating 94 MPH heater. The Badgers' front four remain a potent force.

With a payroll that's $20M below the team's budget, there's room to manuever. So what will it be? Use that space to make a splash in the free agent market, or sell off some of these assets in preparation for a new run in 2011? We'd love for you to make that decision. All you need to do is fill out this form to get the ball rolling. Join up today, create your own persona and lead the Badgers on to the glory they so richly deserve!

The Badgers have their new owner. I'd like to thank everyone who sent in an application, and I'd also like to point out that the League of the Rising Sun is still looking for an owner for the Niihama-shi Ghosts. This is another route to PEBA baseball, albeit one that winds through the Far East. Read up about the Ghosts in the thread linked above, then head over to the PEBA homepage to Join the LRS!

The PEBA is currently holding an Open House
We'd like to get to know you!

We've been extremely lucky to enjoy a fairly stable ownership base. However, openings can and will arise at a moment's notice. When an opening occurs, we will first turn to our waiting list before advertising here on the forums. If we've had a chance to get to know an applicant before a spot becomes available, that person is going to have a large leg up when it comes time to decide who will take over a vacant team.

If you have an interest in the Planetary Extreme Baseball Alliance, we have an interest in getting to know you! To that end, we are currently holding an Open House, allowing interested applicants to introduce themselves to us and get their names on our official waiting list. Here are the steps you should take to become a part of the process:
  1. Submit an application through the league homepage.
  2. In the "Team you are interested in:" field, type in "Open House".
  3. Include as much info about yourself as you can in the "Tell us about yourself:" field.
  4. Check your inbox; you'll be receiving an email shortly with league information and instructions on how to join our forums.
Once you've received your forum information, you'll be able to converse freely with the league. Ours is an extremely communicative collection of owners. If you enjoy talking baseball (or just about anything else) with a group of intelligent, creative individuals, you're coming to the right place.

You'll be getting to know us, learning if we're the right fit for you. At the same time, we'll be familiarizing ourselves with you, so that when that next opening occurs, your name is at the top of the list. It's a win-win situation.

Give yourself a leg up on the competition - join our Open House, start interacting with the league and get yourself on the PEBA waiting list!

The PEBA has immediate openings available

Four of our most pleasant owners have been the Dobney brothers, who have been with us since our league's inception. Sadly, the Dobneys are not going to be able to stay on with us. It's a loss for me personally; these were absolutely capital fellows. But it's also an opportunity for us to meet new owners ready to step in and take their place. Speaking of which, here are the four teams that are coming available:
Have you been interested in joining a quality fictional league where anything can and will happen? Your time has arrived. Here's where you want to go to get started. Provide as much detail about yourself as you can and expect to receive a response shortly with more info about the league. We look forward to making your acquaintance!

So far we've had several very promising candidates write in with interest in our available teams. We're still looking for more, though! I'll keep bumping this thread as we look to replace our departing brother foursome. The 2011 season has just begun, so get in touch with me today so we can get you set up before the all-important June amateur draft arrives!

We're down to two!

The Duluth Warriors and the Yuma Bulldozers have each found new owners. Now our attention returns to the remaining to vacancies.
  • The Canton Longshoremen have opened 2011 with a 10-14 mark. They are just 5 1/2 back of the lead in the Great Lakes Division as well as the 2nd wild card spot, however. There's material to work with here; in the right hands, the Longshoremen can be competitive sooner rather than later.
  • The Omaha Cyclones, also playing in the Great Lakes, have started strong at 13-10. Current Sovereign League Player of the Week Narahiko Imada continues to blossom into a young superstar; his potent bat drives the Cyclones' offense. If an incoming owner can acquire pitching to match... watch out for Omaha.
Contact us right away so that we can get you worked in before the June amateur draft begins. And even if you're not looking to join right now, I invite you to follow the on-the-field as well as the off-the-field PEBA action!

And then there was one

We're down to one final league opening. Oddly enough, the remaining team happens to be the one in the best position to compete right now. That team is the Omaha Cyclones. Sitting just 2 games back of the Great Lakes division lead, Omaha is led by legitimate superstar Narahiko Imada on offense and budding front-liner Chris Grinnell on the pitching side. The team has $10,000,000 in the bank and a number of large expiring contracts, setting up outstanding financial flexibility for 2012. Compete for a division crown this year, then use the team's capital to make a splash in the offseason!

This moment in time aside, the PEBA does not tend to experience a great many vacancies. This may be your last chance to join us for awhile to come. Take the opportunity and touch base with us today.

Our ownership vacancies are filled, but I'd like to extend an offer to anyone who remains interested in the PEBA or the LRS to contact us through our website. I will be happy to add you to our waiting list, the place we will turn to first when filling any new openings. Waiting List members will also gain access to the league forums, allowing you to engage in conversation with our chatty group of owners. Don't let the fact that we're full up stop you from contacting us! We'd love to hear from you.

...Not so fast there, chief! Looks like our new Omaha Cyclones owner didn't stick. These things happen sometimes when you're filling multiple positions at once. As it turns out, we have one more ownership vacancy to fill after all.

Our live 2011 June Amateur Draft will be held exactly one week from today in the PEBA league chat room. Ideally, a new Cyclones owner will be on board before that time. We'd love for you to make your mark on the franchise by determining which young prospects enter the system. For that to happen, you'll want to get plugged in ASAP.

Rather than reiterate what the Omaha Cyclones are all about, I'll simply quote my message from earlier in the thread. You'll find our contact link at the bottom of this post. Hope to hear from your shortly!

A bump to serve notice that we are still on the hunt for a new owner for the Omaha Cyclones. This weekend will be a busy one for us, with the PEBA draft being held live Saturday and Sunday, as well as the live LRS draft next Sunday. However, I will make it a point to get back to applicants as quickly as possible. I know how frustrating it can be to send in an application and have to wait and wait for a response! Don't worry; you will not be left hanging.

Alright, we are once again fully staffed. Thank you to each of you who wrote in with interest. Since I assume our new Omaha Cyclones owner's tenure will last longer than his short-lived predecessor, the PEBA will likely not have any further openings for the 2011 season. That does not mean we don't want to hear from you! Fill out the form on our website to learn more about our league and get yourself a spot on our waiting list. And of course, keep up to date with our latest results and stories!

A GM with some sticktoitiveness could have the Badgers turned around in short order

Kalamazoo is a team with tons of potential, and yet things have been going south for them since the conclusion of their gangbusters inaugural season campaign in 2007, where they went 100-62. Eight fewer wins in 2008; three fewer wins in 2009; nine fewer wins in 2010, dipping below .500 for the first time; and now a 75-87 record as we wrap up the 2011 season.

Everything has been going downhill for the Badgers, which is frankly shocking when you look at the wealth of talent they possess. 1B John Collins is one of the best sluggers in the league. Brett Hurst would be even more valuable if his glove played at 2B. Not that Kalamazoo needs Hurst at second; they've got stud youngster Joel Swedlove manning that position. He forms a dynamic double play combo with SS Raúl García. CF Álex Martínez gives the Badgers an up-the-middle offense to boast about. Er Hang gives them an ace starting pitcher (and a really cool name).

With all that going for them, why do the Badgers continue to play second fiddle to Crystal Lake? Good question. Maybe they just haven't found the right man to lead this collection of talent. Which is where you come in.

It's time for the slow degenerative process to stop. The regular season has just ended, and while Kalamazoo won't be dancing in the playoffs, they can and should be using this time to prepare for a run in 2012. Join now and you'll have the time you need to make the big decisions. Who should be offered arbitration? Which pending free agents should be allowed to walk? Is there a trade out there that will put the team over the top?

Think you might know the answers to these questions? Like to write articles and participate in a highly active forum populated with passionate baseball fans? Then get in touch with me today. The Badgers' fortunes are poised to turn; let's see you lead make them the force to be reckoned with that they deserve to be.

The PEBA is currently accepting applications

We are interested in meeting new potential owners and getting you involved with the league. The Planetary Extreme Baseball Alliance is one of OOTP's premiere participation leagues. Sporting an incredibly active group of owners who keep our forums hopping and our News Archive overflowing, this is where you want to land if you're looking for something more from your online experience than just rote simming.

To get started with the PEBA, fill out this form. You can expect to hear back from me shortly. We look forward to getting to know you.

Whether you're looking to join the league or just love great baseball, I invite everyone to stop by our league's website. The PEBA is currently in the midst of the 2011 Planetary Extreme Championship series. The Aurora Borealis currently hold a 3 games-to-2 lead over the Florida Featherheads to determine who takes home the Rodriguez Cup, the PEBA's championship trophy. It's a clash of the league's two top teams and it should be exciting viewing, so stick around after you've submitted your application and follow the action!

These floundering seafarers are preparing to set sail towards success

History has not been kind to the Canton Longshoremen up to this point. Perennially hovering around 90 losses, it's been hard for the club to gain any traction. While the team enjoys solid support from its base of diehards, let's face it: it's tough to keep the turnstiles moving when you've yet to finish above .500 in a single season. The interest is there, but so far management has been unable to capitalize on it.

The tide may be turning for this team positioned 60 miles off the shores of Lake Erie. One thing Canton has succeeded in is making the most of their draft picks. They've reeled in big fish like Bob Collins (the #13 prospect in the PEBA), Bill Rice and Raymond White through the June Amateur Draft, and it's bolstered their farm system to the point that it's now ranked as the fifth best in the league. Promising slugger Ryosei Kichikawa has just graduated from the farm and is making an early impact in the big leagues. Add these players alongside the power bats of Jack Miller and Steve Fergus, and suddenly you've got the makings of a pretty potent offense.

The pitching haul has been less impressive. Pedro Cruz has been the one constant; beyond him, the pickings are thin at the major league level. Brian Ryan offers some hope of help from the minors, but this is an area a new owner will have to improve upon if Canton is going to navigate the choppy waters and sail towards success.

Contact us right away so that we can get you worked in during our 2011-12 offseason. You'll have time to get yourself situated, examine your new franchise and chart a long-term course for the Longshoremen. Baring unforeseen circumstances, this should be the final PEBA/LRS opening heading into the 2012 season. Don't miss your chance to be a part of one of the best known leagues on the OOTP online landscape!
