Another Thread Asking For Fictional League Help

I'm currently in the planning stage, looking at 2 subleagues, 8 teams each to start. I'm planning on using the Nicknames Project for logos and uniforms, preferably matching up nicknames that can support both a home and away uni.

What I need help with to start is locations of the first 16 teams. I don't want major cities, but I don't want too tiny either. Some ideas I've had so far are :

Arlington, TX
Denver, CO
Tacoma, WA
Greensboro, NC
Rochester, NY

I'd like them scattered a bit, and only one per state, as I plan for this league to expand to the point where there is one team in each state. Let me know any mid-tier cities you think I should use!

Joliet, IL (#4) or Aurora-Naperville (2nd & 5th, #2 largest metro area outside of the Chi.)
Surprised Rockford is still #2. Names for teams that I use are:
Rockford Rockies
Joliet Slammers & Jackhammers
Aurora Aces
Naperville Bandits.
Biggest Cities Illinois, United States

Something to throw out there, and this may not even be relevant, but I'll mention something I did.

I have a 24 team fictional, all teams based in USA. Some teams are in major centres, such as St. Louis, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, but I also have teams in Columbus, Boise, Shreveport - not exactly mega centres. What I did with my setup is, each ML team's affiliates are in the same state.

So I checked Wiki for city populations by state, then picked a city I felt could support a AAA Team, AA and A. I based it on my average attendance I wanted and not on real life populations. So for example, my avg attendance for single A is 2500, so I picked a city with a population of 20,000+. I don't know if that would work irl, but in my fictional world it does.

Anyway, I just wanted to mention this in case you're planning on having a few levels of minors. With 50 teams eventually, you'll want to keep some cities that can support the minor league teams.

You can also get city size data from the OOTP world.xml. That's how I did the same. Just opened it in excel....

If it were me, I'd go with something like Metro Statistical Area rather than individual city size. Arlington, for example, is really part of the Dallas metro area, so it's hard to think of a city there as being in a "mid-tier city." The Texas Rangers play in Arlington.

Assuming Rochester, NY, and its ~1 million statistical area population as a baseline yields a range of reasonable suggestions, many of which are currently home to AAA clubs.

I did something similar to this, but honestly, I didn't pay much attention to the realism of the locale. So for example, my rookie league teams are from some really small towns in FL that clearly wouldn't support a baseball team. But I don't really care.
