Wow talk about a change from one year to the next!

This player Bob Syverson has averaged a 4 WAR overall and had a great year in 96....then 97 hit like some kind of outer space train wreck. Going to be really interested to see if he bounces back or not.

This happens more often to high contact singles hitters than any other type of player.
You get one season of bad dice rolls and a low BABIP and since you don't walk much nor hit for power, your value falls off a cliff.

EDIT: Although that massive increase in SOs is interesting. Did they rise league-wide, or did he just have a horrific year of dice rolls?

Overall strikeouts were very similar league-wide from one year to the next. Also in further update, he bounced back to a 4.4 WAR season (with some time lost to injury) the next year, and his strikeouts went back to just where they were in '96.

Bad years do happen, just like in real life
But I do notice they happen more often with his player type who can only do one thing. Get singles
But he can fall back a bit on being a great SS and good base runner. But when the balls finds the fielders gloves more often then their value goes down a lot.

My first thought too was BABIP. BABIP is just one of the stats I add to my "card views" to help me understand how a player is actually doing.

I will say I didn't even notice the K rate at first. That is an interesting one when, as you noted, the league wide K's hadn't changed much.
