Just wanted to say first off that this game rocks!!! I love Football Manager(I've been playing soccer sims it since One-Nil came out like 15 year ago), Eastside Hockey Manager, and now OOTP 2006 for baseball is in the same league...
As I usually do in these games, I start by taking over a lowly team(in this case Bradenton in class A ball in the Gulf Coast League. It's a very different experience having to deal with players that are on the team one day and then get moved to the next level tomorrow and there is nothing you can do about it...Basically you have little to no control over the makeup of the team, other than setting the lineups and rotations. However, one thing that is really bugging me is what seems like computer roster AI inactivity after the draft. Since we now have all leagues represented I chose to have the amateur draft be a real-life 50 rounds. This turned out to be a big mistake as my team now has 79 players on it. I checked the other teams in the farm system, and they all have about the normal number of players. The thing that makes it really strange to me is that I have quite a few players in their mid 20's(24,25) that have absolutely no shot of ever playing in the majors(they are hitting under or barely .200 in the lowest level of A Ball). In real life, these players are quickly trimmed from the roster to give more playing time to the players the team believes will develop. However, it seems the computer AI is a very loving one as it never cuts players who obviously don't have it to make room for the new draft picks... Something needs to be done with this...If we have all the leagues represented, then it should follow that a draft the same length as the one in real-life should have give similar results to the one in real life... I checked and most minor league teams have between 30-35 players on the rosters...not 75(and some teams had as many as 89!!!). Clearly something is not working the way it should. In real life, player dont get years and years in A-Ball to see if they will pan out....most get between a year to year-and-a-half.... Anyone have suggestions as to what can be done or the issues involved with this? |

See that's the problem...not all TEAMS are represented. Usually a team will have two to three R level teams to accomodate the large numbers of draft picks. Many players never rise above R Ball. But if yuo have enough draft rounds that would normally accompany 5-7 minor league teams, you will experience the roster overload you are now.

No, the number of rookie teams is right, in actuality teams only sign on average 22 players from the draft. The last year I checked the high for a team was 27 players signed and the low was 17. Teams have extended spring training for guys they want under contract but are not ready for a full season league, but after the draft (when the short season leagues start) everybody is assigned to one of the teams. IRL No organization has 75 rookie level players under contract.

I guess that leaving the draft at 25 rounds is the easy answer then...
I knew there must be a reason why it was set to that to begin with... :P |
