Editing team/city names

Okay....first off I'm new to OOTP, a friend of mine is talking me through a few things but I came upon a question and he really was not sure of the answer.

So I'm going to build a fictional leauge, (probably 8 teams, 108 schedule - type thing). I want to build my own cities/team names - basically create my own world. My question is....if I turn on financials and players are being signed, etc. through free agency - how will this be effected by the fact that I have totally fictional world? Don't FA make decisions on who to sign with based on city location, etc?

I don't think the game sees "New York" and realizes, "Ooo, that's a great market, a lot of players should want to play there." I think it's more, "Ahh, they have a winning tradition, a good market, good finances, they should do well and players should want to play there, regardless of the city name."

A lot of it will have to do with your team's performance after the initial draft. If you have a team that consistently wins you'll likely be able to draw the top talent without their telling you they don't want to play where you are.

I hope you enjoy the game!!!

So a teams longitude and latitude has nothing to do with WHERE a FA might sign?

No.

Suppose Joe Nobody was born in Oneonta, NY. He was drafted by the Royals, developed nicely, had good success on the mound, and plotted his escape via free agency from KC.

He's got two offers, one from the LA Dodgers, and one from the New York Yankees, for big bucks. They are very close on dollars and years.

If Joe Nobody desires to play near home, and both contracts are equal, guess where he's going to sign?

The Yankees.

But you responded "No" and then gave an explanation that sounds like "Yes".

I think the primary question is, if a person edits the city for a team and that city isn't in the City.txt file (thus no longitude, latitude), how will the computer know that the ficitonal city in question might be near where his birth city is??

Try it, you can't. The city has to be in the file.

EDIT: Oops, I thought you were talking about editing the birth city. Good question about the other. I'll see if I can make up a city for a
team not in the file.

EDIT2: Hmm. Well, that's a very good question indeed. I was able to create a universe with a team in Oklahomaville which is not in the cities file.

I would consider this a bug in the personnel editor page. It should be requiring the city to be in the cities.txt file, or else the distance calculation won't work. Moving to Tech Support!

For clarity:

FA's willingness to sign a deal can sometimes be influenced by location, and location is determined by values specified inside cities.txt.

I don't have the answer to your primary question. Best guess is that it does not use that variable. That one will need a better answer upstairs.

Look at section 8.1 of the Game Guide for Team Home Page. It doesn't matter what you put in as the City Name. That is just for show. What matters is the city in the "City Search" and "Select Exact City" options.

For example. The City Name for the Texas Rangers is Texas, but Arlington, TX is the exact city match. That is the city that matters.
