Problem with Saves?
Since when does an 7-2 ball game constitute as a save?
I thought it was only a max 3 run difference when a pitcher enters a game. I switched pitchers in the bottom of the 7th, as you'll see I scored a run in the top of the 7th to go 7-2 up, my pitcher then pitched the bottom of the 7th, 8th & 9th and ended up with a save ![]() I went on to win 8-2 but the game was 7-2 when the pitcher entered the game, surely he shouldn't have been classed with the save as it wasn't a save opportunity in my understanding of baseball, I may be wrong though. |

RULE 10.20 Credit a pitcher with a save when he meets all three of the following conditions:
1) He is the finishing pitcher in a game won by his club; and 2) He is not the winning pitcher; and 3) He qualifies under one of the following conditions: a) He enters the game with a lead of no more than three runs and pitches for atleast one inning; or b) He enters the game, regardless of the count, with the potential tying run either on base, or at bat, or on deck (that is, the potential tying run is either already on base or is one of the first two batsmen he faces); or c) He pitches effectively for atleast three innings.

There does seem to be a bit of a problem with these non-standard saves.
The rookie of the year in a recent season happened to be a reliever, and the news of his award included something like "he earned 1 save in no opportunities". ![]() I'll profess a high degree of ignorance on the intricacies of the Save statistic, but even if a reliever comes into a situation that can't result in a blown save or a hold to be credited (e.g. 6-2 lead, none on), in case he turns it into a successful 3+ inning save, that should still be a SVO, right?
