AI pitching decisions
Hopefully this is something in the works with the new improved AI patch that I keep hearing about but...
It's the top of the ninth, tie ball game. My starter pitched 6 solid innings, my number 1 middle reliever shut em down for 2. The middle of my lineup is due up in the bottom of the 9th! It's time to bring in a setup guy, or maybe even the closer, to shut these guys down for their half of the ninth and give my big bats a chance to win it all!! Coming in from the bullpen is.......... scrub middle reliever number 3! The cheers (or is that hateful rage) from the crowd is deafening! This guy has a current ERA of 52.00 so far this year, he has 8 walks and 1 strike out. He's given up 6 HRs in 5.1 IP. His ratings are 7 stuff, 6 movement, and 7 control (according to my wonderful head scout). I have 3 very rested pitchers with over 14 in each category... but the AI (or maybe my useless manager, he really is useless btw) decides to hang the whole show on some 38 year old scrub's crooked dead arm. Admittedly he should have been put in the mopup role, but the game should know better than to bring this guy in in that situation even if I was too lazy to do that. ![]() Also, it did bring in my closer once that loser had let in 2 runs and loaded the bases... the scrub did get at least 1 out, my genius closer got 2 strike outs to end the 9th inning nightmare. Okay, rant over. I really am ejoying this game. ![]() Last season all 5 starters went down with injuries about the same time, for 2 1/2 months my rotation was all triple A starters and my hitters somehow managed to win 83 games... ah the joy of being a simulated gm. ![]() Last edited by tysok; 06-19-2006 at 11:15 PM. |

How can you complain about the computer AI, when you still have a reliever on your staff that has a 52.00 ERA and surrendered 6 HR in 5 2/3 IP?!?!?!
Serves you right. ![]() |

Bullpen AI is a hot topic under examination.

Yes, shame on me. But most of my relief staff is low endurance (although with starters it doesn't matter, a 9 = 100 pitches) so I like to have him for those occasions when the rest of my losers... well... lose. ![]() I'm afraid to see what my triple A pitchers would end up with... he's the best of that bunch. Which is even scarier. |

Seriously, though, you also need to make sure that your pitching staff is set up properly. I let the AI set my staff at the start if the year, then traded the MR that was in the closer's role - a hotshot FA that blew four saves in the first month en route to a 7.72 ERA. I had a designated closer on staff that I started to use, but new officially put in the closer role in my pitching depth chart (unbeknownst to me, I thought I had). Anyways, a time comes where I have to sim the remainder of a game because I didn't have time to finish. My team was in a save situation, and my #1 setup guy came on to get the save, while my "closer" pitched parts of the 7th and 8th. Also, keep in mind that fatigue plays a factor in the AI decision makig process.
With all that said, it probably is still a little broken, and I hope it gets fixed. ![]() |

I know I had it set up right, except of course that number 3 middle reliever probably should have been put in the mop up role. I would have understood if the number 2 middle reliever, the 2 setup guys, and the closer had been tired... or even if they had pitched yesterday, or even if they had pitched 2 days ago.
![]() My major problem with my pitching staff is I've gotten unlucky and signed some horrible injury prone middle relievers - 2 of them have been injured for 3+ months of each season (my hoped for number 1 just went down for 13 months in spring trainings after missing 4 months last year). My minor league prospects for relief are stuck in single and double A, nothing good in triple A, and trying to put together a trade for a decent reliever is almost impossible since the AI doesn't give me any ideas about what they might be looking for in prospects... which is a whole different complaint. ![]() |

You can occasionaly bring a guy up from AA (see Dontrelle Willis and Miguel Cabrera as excellent examples) but these gentlemen are few and far between. Could be worth a shot though, unless you feel it will hurt their development.

tysok,
So sorry for the hideously slow response to this thread. ![]() I'm not sure I have enough evidence here to log a bug on this at this point. Plus, with 1.0.2 just released, I'd be anxious to see if this sort of thing is still an issue. So, I guess what I'd like to do for now is to move this over to "Closed," and we'll try to do a better job of responding more quickly to Tech Support threads next time around. ![]() Let me know what you think.
