Manual HOF selection takes eons
My sim league has about a 40-year history, and when I choose to induct a player into the Hall of Fame, the game takes half an hour or more on "Reading Players" before the list of retired players pops up again. Anything I can do about this?
(I'm on a Mac using OSX 10.4.11.) Thanks. |

Which version of OOTP are you using, please?

How large is your saved game universe? How many leagues and teams?

At the moment it's one league, two subleagues, 16 teams, each with an extensive minor league system. The name of one of the subleagues was changed recently, and about half a dozen leagues fell by the wayside within a period of about 10 years, 35 years ago (per universe calendar). The folder for this particular game within "Saved Games" has to be 25 gig by now, maybe more. |

Hrm. Did you ever try manually inducting players into the Hall before this season? Do you know if it has been getting gradually longer to do so, or whether all of a sudden one year it got terrible?

I'd manually inducted players before. I'm pretty sure the delay has been gradual -- I remember that a week ago it took 15 minutes. |

I'm thinking that this is an unfortunate side effect of your league files continually growing in size. At some point, it becomes fairly taxing for your computer. 25 GB for one saved game folder is unusually large.
You can try cutting back on some of your settings to see if that helps your overall performance. Get rid of a lot of your old box scores and game logs. Get rid of some of your old news. Cut back on some of your stat detail, particularly for your minor leagues. I'm not sure just how extensive your extensive minor league system is, but maybe cut that back some as well. Is there anything further that I can help you with? |

No, stats are saved with the players. You don't need to keep box scores or game logs whatsoever. Personally, I never do for minor leagues at very least.
Let us know how it works. |

I deleted 47 seasons of box scores and game logs. The league seemed to load more quickly. However, when I inducted a player to the Hall, then clicked on the left arrow to go back to "Retired Players," it took 25 minutes to get that screen. Without my having deleted those files, it took at least 45 minutes the last time I inducted someone, so there was *some* positive result. So just for fun, I tried inducting another player, then instead of going right back to "Retired Players," I went to the History page and *then* clicked on "Retired Players." No improvement. Meanwhile, my retired.dat file is 94.5 megabytes, and the players.dat is 61.4 megs. Does this matter? Also, would it make a difference if I got rid of the 55,000 text files in my "messages" folder? |

You've had a lot of players go through your universe, so yes, it will slow you down considerably.
Go ahead and get rid of your messages folder. If you're worried about possibly losing something, just cut and paste it from your .lg folder. You can always put it back later if you wish. Let us know how that goes. |

Well, I got rid of lots of stuff, including the message folder as well as the teams, players, coaches, and history folders out of the html folder, plus messages.dat. (The manual says it won't hurt to lose these files.) I decided also, right or wrong, to get rid of the teams, players, coaches, and history folders from each almanac folder. So maybe it's because my Mac is in the process of deleting over 1.2 million files, but from the time I clicked on "Retired Players" after inducting a new guy to the Hall, it's been over two hours. Here's some more info, in case it helps at all: players.dat 61.4 M retired.dat 94.5 M world.dat 19.8 M teams.dat 12.4 M My news folder contains 48 years' worth of almanac files (just images, leagues, index.html, and styles.css) -- almanac folders range between 11.7 meg and 338.1 meg, not counting the most recent season ('cause I haven't deleted the teams, players, coaches, and history folders yet). The news folder itself is 10.47 gigabytes. If these are ridiculous sizes, what have I done wrong? Also... is it possible that the game has hung up? Activity Monitor shows "Out of the Park Developments (not responding)" in red, but that in itself doesn't necessarily mean it's not working -- just that the beach ball is spinning. I'm afraid to force-quit OOTP -- dunno what data might be lost, if any, or if it'll thoroughly hose this particular game. |

Quick update:
The "Retired Players" process thingy stopped about 10 minutes after my last post and returned me to the retired players page. So OOTP chewed on my HOF selection for about two hours and 20 minutes. |

You did nothing wrong, per se. You just saved a whole lot of data. At one point, you had a lot of leagues running and you've put a lot of history behind it.
So how quickly does the game save and load up now that you've deleted those files? How long does the HoF induction take now? |

Sorry for the lack of reply until now. Believe it or not, I'm *still* deleting those files. I've only got an 80-gig hard drive, but we're talking a million-plus files to delete. I believe I'm most of the way through the process, but I've been deleting only a few thousand at a time, mostly because I like to see the progress bar get all the way to the right now and again.... Anyway, aside from the files being deleted at the moment, I've still got a few gig to go. I tried a manual HOF induction a few days ago, and it took forever again, but *less* forever. Did one today, and I think it took about 10 or 15 minutes. So obviously it's a good idea to get rid of all those files. Will update further when I've got something new to say. |
