19th century schedules
I started working on a 19th century schedule last night, and just finished version 1.0 (because I KNOW there's going to be some tweaking needed). Here's the details:
- The season is 1871 -Per wikipedia and Le Grande Orange's suggestions, it is a 30 game schedule, BASED ON the real life schedule obtained from Retrosheet Home Page -This version is designed to fit the Historical League option using the default Lahman roster!! Ideally, the league would be a single league setup where I could basically just copy paste the original schedule. That's not the case when importing an historical league, so I replaced/eliminated some games, then had some extensive doctoring for gameplay balance.- This means that each team plays every other team between 3-5 times in the season, 15 home and 15 away. (Yes, there's "interleague" play) - The season, in its current condition, stretches from May 4th to October 19th, so that will likely need to be fixed. Good news for giving pitchers some time between their consecutive starts, but maybe just a little longer than it actually needs to be ![]() I'd like to do each season from 1871-1900, and hopefully 2 versions of each (although the farther along I get the less difference there will likely be between the two). I'm doing this because at some point I'd like to run an almost complete replay of history with real schedules/teams, and since I'm not nearly as obsessed as everybody else ![]() If anybody would be interested in helping me test these schedules in terms of gameplay balance and historical accuracy, post here. The things I'd look out for would be the common gripes for 19th century play: - Enough rest for 1-2 man rotations - Relatively balanced schedules (here would be the greatest difference between the two versions). Fair gameplay in the default lahman version (ie same number of games against all opponents, good home/away split etc). -Anything else that I screwed up I'm gonna run some quick tests right now, once this thread gets enough attention and volunteers I'll post some of the schedules (once I've made them, of course!) |

I can help test. I've been wanting to do this myself so thank you for your initiative and willingness to share these!

There were a lot of games in a short amount of time in the playoffs, which probably skewed those results a little bit. Last edited by __JR__; 08-04-2008 at 09:19 AM. |

It looks like pitchers can fully recover their stamina in 2 days rest (0% to 100% rested)
As far as playability vs realism, we'll have to figure out a balance of letting the pitchers full recover for most/some of their games or having to pitch on little rest. If anybody here pitched back then, please speak up ![]() |

Id be interested. Im almost finish editing the database so that players import to their real teams. Except for seasons when there was an odd number of teams. I also had to use the AL so i could start a historical league and use the automatic expansion option. I didnt see that option when starting as a fictional league. But instead of using the modern teams i just used the actual teams. Except for 1877 & 1878 where i had to add one year players from the Union Association & Players League. It was either that or have 4 teams in the NL and 2 teams in the AL. I figure the new teams should suck and finish last. If the real teams cant beat them then maybe they didnt belong either.

I haven't been able to work on the 19th century schedules, have had too many other things going on lately. Plus, I have to admit, I've been much more interested in the financial side of things for OOTP, and have spent a lot of time researching real-world major and minor league financial data. I've assembled quite the grab-bag of info, from lots of sources. I hope to put it all together into a coherent and detailed proposal for OOTP 10.
Anyway, if anyone wants to try their own hand at a 19th schedule set, let me know and I can send you the original major league schedules for 1877-1900 to use as a starting point. Some seasons wouldn need few changes for OOTP as it stands, other seasons would need more modifying. |

I think it would be a good idea to try to coordinate our efforts a little bit, baseballman.
You said you're nearly done with your editing, so I'd like to know which teams are playing in which years, and if you're basing this off of the lahman database. I've been doing most of the work in pre 1882 years, and it looks as if the years after that date should be easier. I suppose this will eventually be a quickstart or a template, but I've never run either of those. What I'd like to see is the ability to get all the correct settings (from the Rules and Options tabs, not from strategy/player creation) and schedule loaded for the initial year, and then at least be able to auto load the correct schedule for the remaining years (until 1901, where I'd like to see the game auto load the normal historical schedules). I noticed in my sim yesterday that the game did not load the 1901 historical schedule once the game got to that year, even though it was still importing the historical rookies and presumably auto expanding. But those are things I'm sure others have much more experience with, I'll concentrate on at least getting the ground work done for the schedules. By the way, I do get along pretty well with most Packers fans. At least we share a common hatred of Bears fans, and we can always make fun of those pitiful Lions fans ![]() Last edited by __JR__; 08-05-2008 at 08:20 AM. |

Jr,
I can send you the files i changed when i get off work. Its just the pitching, batting, fielding, fielding OF, and teams csv files from 1871-1900. I deleted all stats from UA & PL except for players that played one season which i used to keep the league at 8 teams in 1877 & 1878. The players seem toimport ok and to the teams but im checking to see how the game handles all the team changes. And im trying to double check the years 1877, 1878,1884 ,1890 since those were the years were i had to edit players. Thingslike i just gave the players one single line of stats if they played for 2 teams in the UA. So like in of i wanna make sure they have one line as well. Little things like that. The rest of the years should be ok since i just assigned them to the AL or NL. But anyways if you wanna take a look and if you have a better suggestion on the team movenment just let me know. |

Anything you can add or suggest is welcome.
I've got a testable version of 1882 I'm posting. I took the schedule for the NL from Retrosheet Home Page , and since that file only had games for the NL, I just copy/pasted the games into the league for the "AA". This is designed for the default historical league if you imported it from the lahman database. If you test this, please only comment on playability at this point. For the setup of the default historic league/lahman database, realistic schedules are going to be very unlikely due to the league setup/ team progressions. This schedule has games on the (likely) correct dates, and with the (likely) correct series lengths/frequency. Tell me what you think. BTW, how are you feeling about the whole Brett Favre situation, No Pepper? Until I actually heard that he had been traded to the Jets i was about 80% certain he'd end up in a Vikings jersey. Go figure. Last edited by __JR__; 08-07-2008 at 01:59 AM. |

Zip file containing the original schedules for 19th century seasons attached below. One file is expressly set up as a CSV file, the rest are text files but are CSV files internally and can be imported into Excel or other spreadsheet apps. Seasons covered are 1877-1900; each league has its own file.
These schedules are the ones as originally published in newspapers of the day or otherwise released by the leagues before the season began. I can't say for certain these files are 100% accurate, as they are older files, but I don't know of any typos or other errors in them offhand. Don't mind the "stats2" in the text file names, that's a left over from something else. Note that the 1898 had its schedule altered during the season when Cleveland abandoned its home park and played out its games on the road. The 1899 schedule was revised shortly before the season started (the included file does not incorporate these changes), and it was also altered further during the season when Cleveland and later Louisville abandoned their home parks and played out their remaining games on the road. These are the actual schedules, so naturally they have to be edited in order to be used for OOTP given its current limitations with the 19th century league structural changes. Any questions about the files, just ask. Hope this helps... |

Here's an "as played" schedule. This will not work with the default historical league, the structure has to be 14 teams, 6 in Sub league 1, and 8 in sub league 2.
This "should" be more realistic, but it looks to be less user friendly (playability may be an issue as well). Edit: Thanks LGO. ![]() |

I've got a question for anybody who knows the answer:
When the game looks at the teams.csv file, does it look at all the stats or just the first 3-4 columns? It would be much easier to edit the file if it didn't. Or, if I'm looking at this in the completely wrong way, you can let me know about that too. Thanks! |

i dont know about all the stats but i have doubts that it does. Because it doesnt
show any changes to the ballparks names if you change them. Yet the ballparks match the ones in the teams csv file. The park data seems generic. |

Is this a situation where "Import complete History" would come into play?

Well i had all the players to go to their orginal teams but i had to shelve the project because the game must take the teams for the first year of a league from somewhere other than the teams csv file. The other years import ok but it causes an expansion for teams when you dont want an expansion unless you just keep the orginal teams that was put in the database.
Its no big deal i just wanted to use the database that came with the game when i wanted a more what if. But i wanted players to go to teams when i wanted a more strict historical replay with actual real trades. Also to have teams folding and new expansion teams to replay the way it was in the 19th century. But like i said no big deal. Better to concentrate on what does work. So having said that how are we making out on schedules. I would like to schedule 5 games a month for the 30 game schedule but im not sure how to make schedules yet. It might be a good idea to compare our settings from each year for 19th century leagues. There may be ways that we could help each other out. Ive noticed for me personally that i have to set injuries very low and fatigue low for at least the first 5 years. I also turn suspensions off till 1900 but i may turn them on sooner. Someone may have a better suggestion. In Just little things like that will hopefully help us get the 19th century play to be more enjoyable. |

Just simmed from 1871-1949 and only had illlegal # of players error one time.
I think it was because i change the setting for injuries to average. I think i will keep it at low till 1900. Indivual stats dont look to bad. When Ty Cobb bats .367 in rel life and he bats .366 in youtr sim, id say thats pretty close. Oh and Ty played his whole entire career in the sim. Cy Young only had 380 wins but that was probably cause i went to a 4 man roatation too soon. Babe Ruth finished with 700 hrs. So far the alltime best. Im not gonna use drug suspensions till 1970 or later. I didnt use 40 man rosters but in my next test run i will. I may try different schedule lengths too. I do know that no matter what the schedule length i would like it to stretch from April to September. All in all i like the results im seeing. Im not one to focus on how close the whole league does stat wise even though i know it can effect indivual performance. Because i can for the life of me i cant remember which team had the best batting average in 1993 but i can rememeber indivual perormances. Thats what i like when the induivual stats are close to real life. Not the exact same result but close. |
