X error in linux

Hi

I'm running Ubuntu Linux 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) 64bit. The installation of ootp10 went fine, but when I try to run the ootp10 executable, it crashes with the following:

Quote:
X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
Major opcode of failed request: 72 (X_PutImage)
Serial number of failed request: 590
Current serial number in output stream: 602
Any ideas?

I will call in one of our "Linux experts" to take a look!

Oh I love cryptic X11 opcodes. I think this is due to a colour depth mismatch. Which is strange as I use the default X11 visual, and I check its compatible before trying to draw to the screen. What screen mode/depth are you in?

What I do find odd is the installer worked. It uses the same x11 code as the game. Do you have OpenGL on your system?

I am thinking it might be an OpenGL issue, try running from the command line like this:

./ootp10 nofacegen

That will disable OpenGL. If it works then you will need to check out why your system does not accept OpenGL. Try installing and running glxgears to test it. Also run glxinfo and look for the line "direct rendering: Yes" to show your 3d hardware is setup correctly.

Please let me know how you get on and what you find.

oooh, just noticed you are on 64bit system. OOTP is a 32bit app. This is not a problem, but you will need to ensure you have the right 32bit libs installed and working. So when doing the tests above, make sure you are using the 32 bit glxgears/glxinfo as the 64 versions will be using different libraries.

(wont life be simpler once everyone has xfered to 64bit?)

Ah. That's the problem. This is a laptop with an ATI radeon 200m Xpress graphics card. In their infinite wisdom, ATI/AMD dropped driver support for this card, even though there are many, many people still using it. I'd need to roll back my version of X and the kernel to get this to work.

Starting the app with the "nofacegen" argument gave me the same error. So no go there.

Luckily, ootp10 works on my desktop, so this isn't a huge issue.

Thanks for your help.

I should add that the open source driver for the 200m is 2D only, with no direct rendering support. So that's apparently the issue. There are rumors floating around that this driver may acquire 3d support in the future, but I'm not holding my breath.

Thanks

So it was a driver issue as you were forced to use the wrong driver?

Well, it's not the *wrong* driver, it's just crippled. There is no OpenGL support for it, and if ootp10 requires that, then I'm SOL.

As any other linux user with a 200M will tell you, driver support for this card has been spotty at best. The problem is that this chipset is everywhere, as it was a very popular integrated video card in many laptops sold as recently as last year. AMD recently dropped it to "legacy" support.

Sigh.

Ah, this is one of the reasons I gave up on Ubuntu. Its a nice little distro, but Mandriva (esp the club powerpack verison) has better driver support. That said I have no idea if that card is any better supported.

The "nofacegen" command line option should disable all OpenGL calls so I would have expected it to have worked
