Ullamaliztli Namique and Desert League Logos
This thread is for concepts for jasg224's modern Mesoamerican Ballgame League and it's Southwestern US spinoff, the Desert League. I'm working on this and Antarctica at the same time so I'm reading about two very different regions.
![]() Here are the league logos (I ended up making two, might reuse the brick wall one for something else). The rubber ball of the old game now sports baseball seams. (red and dark brown colors from here) |

Desert League
The Desert League logo is my attempt at making a tumbleweed baseball (subject to improvement!)

Los Angeles Condors
and California Condors version
The condor casts a shadow in the shape of California. The letter tags on the wings are meant to represent the numbers that modern condors are tagged with. I'd also like to do a small letter logo for this, the bird is very small by itself. The second small logo has less detail. Last edited by 20_range; 09-18-2024 at 03:03 PM. |

These are great! Love the tiny details on the Condors logo that give it more personality.

Fort Worth Horned Frogs 1
The concept here is that since the Desert League is a new league that is inspired by a more popular league in another country, some of the logos should have either Mexican or Ullamaliztli/pok-a-tok themes. Kind of like the early MLS with Chivas USA and Real Salt Lake, or the [Tokyo] Giants or Panamanian Yankees.
So with that in mind here is a pretty simple Fort Worth concept. The W is an upside down M in the style of the 1968 Olympics/1970 World Cup, and the modern national team, and it is in Mexican flag green and white. (I also included a version in tan in case it looks better - and it's hard to see the white on this board) *edit: obviously I now also find myself halfway through drawing a lizard Last edited by 20_range; 09-20-2024 at 04:08 PM. |

I really like this 20, great colours. Can I be cheeky (again) and ask if you could make me a Mexico City Aztecs version? No changes needed other than Mexico City across the top two 'gaps' and Aztecs across the bottom. Founded in 2040 ![]()

Love it! Am I correct in assuming the main logo was inspired by the Mexica sun stone? Cultural/Historic sidenote for those interested: (I know nobody ask but this is something I have to say as a native mexican proud of my heritage.) Even though the "Aztec" empire and such other terms are popular, the correct term for them would be Mexica, Mexico-Tenochtitlan, Tenochca or Triple Alliance (the nahuatl name for this state was Exkan Tlahtoloyan: the three places that give orders). They never called themselves Aztecs, this is a name made up by gringo historians who thought referring to them as Mexican would be for some reason confusing. The term "aztec" is referring to their legend of coming from a place called Aztlán, which I think is ironic because why would you name them after the place and people they were actively trying to get away from. Nowadays, mexican historians/archeologists/etc shy away from using the term "aztec" in favor of using the more correct terms mentioned above. "Aztec" has been relegated to a sort of "common language" umbrella term for most of the nahuatl speaking communities of central Mexico. |

Thanks Jasg, this is really interesting, and I always want to make sure I'm using correct terms and being sensitive to important facts like this. Thanks for saying. Would Mexico City Tenochca be a better name for the team? Is there anything in particular you'd like to call a team from Mexico City, would you prefer they steered away from native Mexican names?

I'm all for native names, in particular here where it's all around us. There's actually a professional american football team called the Mexicas from Mexico City. There's also an Aztecs team for a university in Puebla, though that university was founded as the Mexico City College by a group of people from the US, which makes sense. If you're going for a native identity: - Tenochcas evoques the great city of Tenochtitlán, the sprawling hub of the Mexica empire which was built on a lake and was home to hundreds of thousands of people before the arrival of the Spanish. - Tlatoques (chiefs) or Tlatoanis (those who speak, these words are somewhat synonyms) is what the leaders of this time period were called - Or perhaps figures important in the culture: names related to corn, jaguars, eagles, the sun. Defining a single culture in Mesoamerica is hard because it wasn't all that homogenous, but rather a blend of their own beliefs and those they adopted from Toltecan, Mayan, and other cultures present in central Mexico. Anyway, sorry if it's too much text, and hopefully this helps you. Also if you want to keep the Aztecs, feel free to do so; I think we've gotten used to the term in popular culture and it's not derogatory in the way other popular names for native groups are (Chichimeca, Huichol, Popoloca, etc). |

Yes, somewhat - once I found those eagle images, I wanted it to be at the center of a stone disc. I'm still working on learning how to reliably do patterns - this one ended up pretty stylized. And I wanted to stay with your color scheme. I did think of the Triple Alliance name though when I wound up with those three red intersecting lines. ![]() |

Thanks, this is really good to know, and a helpful list of names that I may use some for other teams in the region going forward. I think I'll use Mexico City Tenochcas as I like the sound of that, and the meaning as you've helpfully outlined.

I like how your logos are still unique and weird but through this process over the years your skill continues to level dramatically. Thanks for sharing your creations with the community!

I know it's two horseshoes making an M, but it sort of reminded me of the cattle branding irons. Probably because of the "twisting metal to make a letter" idea. |
