United League - 1972 - two openings
The United League is a 12-team alternative history league with fictional teams but real players. We are entering our 22nd! season, have a great group of owners, and are using OOTP 10.
We run about 2 sims a week, covering a half-month, no DH, free agency, active trading. Because there are only 12 teams, there are a lot of big names on every team. The two available teams available are: Detroit Griffins, coming off a second straight season within 4 games of the pennant, with a decent pitching staff anchored by certain Hall of Famer Pedro Ramos, and a power-packed lineup with Reggie Jackson, Bobby Bonds, Dick Allen, and Frank Howard. Instant playoff contender. Just a couple good moves away from their first pennant in their 22-year history. Are you the man for the job? Atlanta Hilltoppers, winners of the 1971 UL World Series by a four-game sweep, feature the most prolific offense in the league's history, led by MVP Joe Torre, who hit .373-43-149 and just missed the Triple Crown. At age 31, Torre is still in his prime and is locked in for another 4 years. The pitching staff is anchored by 25-year old Steve Carlton, coming off a 16-11 season with 217 Ks. Both clubs are available immediately. Email the commissioner at united.league@gmail.com. |

you gotta give this one another look. most league openings are for broken-down teams, or patchy leagues with limited history. here you get a long-running league manned in part by guys that have been simming fake baseball games together since microleague in 1988.
i know, you're gonna say you have actually seen winning teams open before--full of old dudes on bad contracts!!!! but that's not the case with either of these squads. the defending champions have a young pitching staff, a lineup full of dudes in their prime, and $12MM in cap room. but they're in the toughest division and no team has repeated in five seasons. you're starting from a solid base, but there's plenty of work to do if you're gonna stay top of the heap. detroit has narrowly missed the playoffs two years running in a wide-open division. it's a mix of vets and youth throughout the roster + $20MM to spend. these are excellent opportunities that are not to be missed. we're a bunch of fake baseball nerds just as interested in the history and making goofs as we are the stats and cranking out the sims. if you look at the boards you see that we're just now restarting after a long layoff. we're about to start both FA and the draft, so it's an ideal time to join. long story short: come on in, the water's fine. |
