Can you get promoted from field manager to GM?

This is probably a stupid question. New to the game.

I made my way up to triple-a manager. When I eventually make it to manager at the MLB level, is there a chance to get promoted to GM or in the jobs will there be available spots if somebody gets fired? I know that's not how the real world works really, but I was just wondering.

Or is the only way really to be GM for a team is to go into commissioner mode.

I haven't played 13 much, but I think it works the same way here as previous versions. In the minors you get jobs as the manager, but once you get a job at the top level it's only for the GM position. Of course you can also act as manager if you wish. But you won't be able to get a job as JUST the manager.
