Supplemental Draft Round?
What is the supplemental draft round?
In my latest draft I had the following: Round 1, pick 24, overall 24 Round 2, pick 24, overall 84 ???? The next three rounds my pick continued as overall 114, 144, 174 Doing sone detective work I found another team that had a 31st overall pick in a supplemental round which I totally missed. Since these supplemental picks were apparently 31 through 61, I missed some decent players and ended up with one lousy draft day! |

I looked it up. It's an extra draft round, held between the first and second rounds for teams that lost players to free agency.

Yep, and it can be a real boost for lower market teams that have issues holding onto talent. Though I wish there was a little more correlation between talent and the compensation for players. I'll lose a 5* 27 year old pitcher and get a 3rd or 4th rounder plus the compensatory pick, then lose a 37 year old 2* guy and get a first rounder and the compensatory pick. Really odd sometimes.

The reason is that you're getting the signing teams top available draft pick. One season I made a huge splash and signed enough free agents so that I blew my entire draft the next year.

And then one year I lost so many players that I must have had ten picks in the first round plus the supplemental round of the next draft.

I wish they'd assign the picks after the FA period is over. How does MLB assign compensatory picks? Because it's irritating to see a team sign some lower tier guys (Who usually sign quicker anyway) and snap up the best compensatory picks, while the 5* guys who usually wait till the last minute are only giving out 3rd and 4th rounders.
