Freeze ups
Way too many freeze-ups. Be sure to save your games after about a month or pay the consequences of starting the last save date over again.

Another thing I find useful is to defrag regularly. OOTP fragments HDD quickly. How do you play? If you play out games then you should auto save daily. If you sim you can still autosave weekly which means you can never lose more than one week. The time penalty is negligible when simming to a future date.

Two things I can add to Rich's comments.
First, don't just save, but back up! Especially when things are going well. For, your last save might include the corruption that is destroying your league. The second thing is, try either turning off your A-V program temporarily, or excluding the OOTP game folders from its scanning. That might be the problem with the game freezing at times.

I'll only add this, though it's no consolation. When I hear about freezes, often they're not lockups, they're just inconvenient incidents where the game takes a long time to reach the end of an execution. I don't run into it a lot, but when I do, it's frustrating. Sometimes it's messages saving, sometimes it's a history click, etc.... but since the latest release version, waiting it out has always resulted in 'getting there,' regardless of the occasional uncomfortable timeframe. Oddly, and this is just perception I know, I'm able to convince myself I speed it along a bit by clicking the mouse and causing the equivalent of the hourglass with the spinning icon on the screen.
