Manager vs bench coach
I just hired davey Johnson and tony La russa with Dave as bench coach and tony as manager.. I have all of my minor league managers do the line ups and such but with those two staff members with my mlb what's the difference.. Like I know the manager goes to the pitching mound and does the line up but is bench coach any different or should I just have one of the two?

They help development as all coaches do. Personally I ignore ratings for the most part with managers and focus on their strategic tendencies to try and match them to the team's strengths.

Bench coach is supposed to be your #1 guy for improving fielding, I think.

Make each of them complementary. For example, have a manager that is great at handling veterans, and a bench coach that is great at handling players.
My philosophy is that, at the Major League level, your coaching staff should be geared more towards extracting performance from Major League talent, not at developing young talent. Leave that to your Minor League system (and hire good coaches too ![]() Now, that's not to say that you should ignore the "teaches" category, but as megamanmatt said, look at their strategic tendencies and either manipulate your lineup to meet the coaching tendencies, or shop for new coaches that better suit your talent. In the Bigs, it's all about winning, and you won't get far with a coaching staff that act like college professors if your talent keeps striking out. |

I look at handle Vets/rookies and handle players for manager, then handle rookies/vets (the opposite of the manager) and fielding for bench coach
For minor league managers, the better at handling rookies and teaching, the lower they go in the minors with my AAA manager being pretty much average all around |
