minimum service time
Does anyone have a list of minimum service time for one year days for seasons smaller, and larger, than 162 games.
Is it just the amount of days between the start of the season and end of the season? |

That's really up to you. Currently it's 172 days of service to equal one year, but that length is, from what I understand, driven by federal rules and regulations involving labour and employment. Back in the mid-1950s, for example, when the season was 154 games played over 168 days, it was still a 172-days-to-a-year threshold for determining when a player had eight years' of service which then allowed him to refuse an assignment to the minor leagues.
However, keep in mind this formula is only used when computing partial seasons of service. If a player is with a club for its entire regular season then he gets credit for a year of service regardless of the length of the season or the number of individual days equaling a year of service. If a player had two full seasons on a club and 86 days of service in each of two other seasons then he has three years of major league service even though he has played in four different seasons. In the minor leagues, it takes thirty days of service to equal one year for the purposes of determining whether a player is eligible to play at a given level of minors. The fewer the number of days it takes to equal a year of service the faster players will accumulate years of service time towards free agency if they partially play in a lot of seasons. The more days it takes the slower players will accumulate years of service. Last edited by Le Grande Orange; 08-19-2014 at 06:31 PM. |
