Pitcher gets win without pitching!?!?

Mark Clear was injured on the 3rd out of the top of the 9th with the game tied. The game asked for the new pitcher at that time. I chose Tom Burgmeier. Jim Rice led off the bottom of the 9th with a walk off home run. Burgmeier got the win without throwing a pitch. It should have been Mark Clear.

More often I see when a batter gets injured making an out, a replacement is asked for and than gets credit for a pinch hit at bat when he did not bat at that time.

Thank you

This is an old and known problem, but programming to correct it apparently would be quite challenging. One of the drawbacks of relying on algorithms. In a perfect universe, every copy of OOTP would download a baseball-savvy imp into one's computer, and the imp would compile the box scores and statistics.

I have more important things to do.

But in the case of the pitcher, couldn't the game be changed to not ask for the new pitcher until the new pitcher is needed to pitch? In this case after the 9th was completed?

You're not the first, or even the second, to suggest that solution, but, again, it would be difficult to fit into the program. The flaw is irritating - it just showed up in one of my own games - but I fear that it will be a while before it rises to the top of the issue queue.

Sometimes things that seem like simple fixes are complex, for various reasons that are beyond my non-programming understanding of the game. (I learned BASIC on a TI computer in 1983. Does that count?)

And sometimes things that seem complex are easy to implement, again, for reasons that are beyond me.

Usually with things like this that have knocked around for a while, Markus is aware of the issue and hasn't been able to address it because of the amount of work involved vs. how often it pops up. However, since he now has Matt working with him, this is the kind of thing he could offload to a second programmer while he works on something else.

So, hopefully these kinds of things will get cleared off the to-do list quicker than in the past.

Again, though, since I'm not a programmer, please don't take this as a promise that this particular issue will be fixed within a certain timeframe. I don't know what their priorities are right now.

Did you take the class in a public library? That is where I learned my BASIC in the summer/fall of 1983 and winter of 1984.

I remember the day in the 90s I started with QBASIC. That is as far as I have evolved.

So many ideas for games and programs, no knowledge to program!

Has happened in real life where a pitcher got the win without throwing a pitch. Rare yes but one that I do remember is that a pitcher picked off a runner at first and his team scored in the bottom half of inning and won the game thereby giving him the win.

I used a TI computer in a class in 7th grade and learned a bit there, but I also simply taught myself from the book that came with the computer, since I had one at home too. I wasn't very good at it, though. A friend who now has a PhD in Computer Science had the same computer and was able to do all kinds of things that I could never figure out.

I mastered generating random numbers and IF/THEN statements, though!
