Manager Influence on GM Moves
I have searched for several weeks on this, but can't find another thread.
I am playing around with manager-only mode, and wondered if there is a way to influence your GM. Think, if Mattingly goes into his GM in October and says, "Hey, I sure would like to have more help in the bullpen next year and an upgrade at SS", that's not completely ignored. Okay, if Scioscia did it, it would have been ignored, but still....The GM is going to run his team, obviously, but it seems like the manager should have some influence in terms of desires. The options I have thought of are (assuming commish mode) to run it through the owner (you could probably set goals there?), change the GM's strategy (not sure on this one, and you are then changing the core of working "for" the GM), or just making yourself GM for the first day or two of free agency, then reverting to the manager-only mode. I honestly haven't tried them yet as I wanted to seek out input, but that's all I came up with as options. I kind of like the idea of managing but not having full control like you do if you play both roles, and would like to maintain the integrity of working for a GM, but do feel there is some plus to making the relationship a two-way street, the Angels notwithstanding. Thanks! |

I agree...after my GM signed a 30 year old skills-deteriorating #3 pitcher to a 7 year contract fit for a #1 and then signed a "hot-tempered and belligerent" .200 hitting middle infielder who has been on 4 teams in two years...and then he and the owner complain when my team is 10 games out of first at the end of April...
I have a few words I would like to share with the GM.

I picked up this version of OOTP during the Steam summer sale because of manager mode. I'm sure I'll play around with being the GM more in the future, but right now I'm more interested in the game managing.
I know it's a new feature this year, so they'll be tweaking it in years to come. It would definitely be helpful to have the capability to talk with your GM to voice your opinion on what your team needs. On my game right now, I'm managing my hometown Twins (a job that will require a good deal of patience considering how bad they'd been the last couple of seasons). Other than a move I didn't like the first couple weeks of the season, sending my 4th OF (Hicks) to AAA for a 1B (Vargas), the GM has sat on his hands when it comes to making moves with the big league club. Vargas has been hitting .326 as my regular DH, but hasn't gone deep yet, which made that move a little more palatable despite the lack of power. However, my bullpen stinks (to put it mildly). There are a couple of guys doing alright, but as a unit their ERA in the middle of May is 5.16. The starters aren't exactly lighting it up either, but that's because they have 1 bad inning that ruins their start. It didn't help that my offense quit getting clutch hits--especially with 2 outs and RISP. A .500 April has been followed up with a 1-9 start to May. I did just adjust my AI settings after reading another thread on here, so maybe that will help, but I definitely wish I could talk to my GM about getting some fresh faces in my bullpen. Some middle infielders who could hit would also be nice as none of my current guys are hitting their weight. |
