What to do?

What a conundrum!

I get emails from different players all the time telling me what a mess the team is in. I have an owner who keeps telling me to get rid of a particular player. This has been going on for several seasons now. I know who the finger is being pointed at (The Left Hand of God himself--Sandy Koufax).

Here's the problem. He is a 10/5 player so he can't be traded. He has won 9 Cy Young Awards and 8 MVP's. He wins between 25 and 30 games a season. He is the best player in the league.

I'd trade him to stop the emails, but he won't go. I could cut him but I can't bring myself to do it.

In your opinion, oh faithful masses of OOTP players, what would you do? It seems to me I either have to cut him or ride out the years. I'm curious to hear what the rest of you would do.

Thank you.

Get yourself some quality leaders at unimportant positions. Backup catchers, long relievers, utility infielders...those are cheap, and can mitigate the effect of a clubhouse cancer. Also, get rid of troublemakers who aren't superstars..

Win. Winning teams don't complain.

I beg to disagree. They have won the last 5 WS in a row and are rarely out of the playoffs. When you look in the dictionary under "winning team", there is a picture of my team (Koufax and all) right there.

Then the game must correlate stuff differently in different leagues. I win constantly and I have some jerk players as a deliberate strategy. I have no complaints.

You have won 5 straight World Series and you think there is a problem?

The only problem I have are the emails telling me how bad things are. Obviously how bad could they be if we keep winning? There really is no logic in being told the clubhouse is like a middle school and things like that, if the team isn't going down the toilet.

I was just wondering what other game players would do in a similar situation. I was wondering if anyone would just release him to get rid of the noise.

turn off owner goals... kidding. although that will stop some of the emails, i bet. it doesn't make much sense, but i think it's just mimicing the possibility that in RL an owner is irrational. on occasion, good players and coaches get run out of town for silly reasons in real life.

you'd have to look into all the particulars. maybe you have 1 too many bad personalities that good leadership and winning cannot counteract.

if individuals on your roster are not unhappy, i wouldn't worry about the overall report. is the team underperforming? any negative effects? in this context, winning the WS is all i care about. so, what you should do depends alot on your perspective.

if the guy wins 25-30 he's not going anywhere on my team, lol. i don't care if he sacrifices goats in the mezzanine before games, hates kids and senior citizens, and runs over dogs for sport on his days off.

The emails are a trick. The AI can't beat you, so it is trying to get you to break up your team. You always say you want more difficulty, so here it is. Good thing you didn't fall for it.

Yeah, if you've won five World Series in a row and a handful of your players are sending you emails saying that the team is a mess, get rid of those guys. You can't trade Sandy and you can't bring yourself to release him so just trade away the guys sending the emails.

You would get back more for them than you would for Koufax.

Your job is to win, not to make AI's happy. The worst that can happen is that the owner will fire you for failing to ditch Koufax.

And now that we are fully committed to this subject, it's my turn to rant. Thanks for the opportunity, Martin.

The personality feature is completely useless in a historical environment, because there is no data to support the personality traits assigned to the players. Instead, it is random and often wrong. Would Koufax be a clubhouse problem? Of course not.

I don't want the feature removed from the game, because it is a lot of fun in a fictional league. But it should be disabled by default in a historical or current MLB game.

Sometimes I love your rants.

Plus, if the AI isn't going to follow it but is just blowing smoke U.M.A. (new acronym), then don't have such a thing.

I agree with you regarding historical/fictional. Fictional, the game can make anyone what they want. Historical should follow who the guys really were. Dave Kingman was a clubhouse cancer (from what I've heard). Sandy Koufax was the Left Hand of God. It actually says in my league that he has "a chip on his shoulder". It must be hard to throw with a chip on your shoulder, especially if it was his left shoulder. If he didn't have that chip, he'd win 40 games a year at least.

I had a player that was a pain but not a major one. I kept him on the team for 2 seasons as he was still producing and the team was still winning. Owner wanted him off the team. I finally worked out a trade and got rid of him and this season a couple of players are now playing real well. Before they hardly hit their weight.
