Promotion/Relegation Using Independent Leagues

I have been kicking around the idea of using the independent leagues to have a sort of English Premier League style promotion/relegation setup. I wanted to know what others thought of it and if you guys had any ideas or pointers that might make the league setup a little smoother.

Here is what I had in mind...

Top/Level 1 - 16 teams, bottom 3 teams relegated to level 2 each off-season.

Middle/Level 2 - 18 teams, top 3 promoted to level 1, bottom 3 relegated to level 3 each off-season.

Bottom/Level 3 - 19 teams, top 3 promoted to level 2 each off-season.

I can set this up as a custom league and just rename all the teams, but I have no idea how to use real teams or rosters from the game. Any pointers? Has anyone done anything like this in the game? If so, how'd it go?
