Rule 5 question
We are at the rule 5 draft.
A team waived/DFA'd 4 players to make room to protect other players on their 40 man roster. Neither their waiver period or DFA periods have expired. They were all waived/DFA'd at the same time. They all show as irrevocable waivers. All 4 players show on their 'profile'-->'Contract & Status' page that they should be Rule 5 eligible. But only 1 of the 4 are actually showing up in the Rule 5 draft pool. Question is; should all/none of these players be in the rule 5 pool? Why is only one of the players actually in the draft pool? Am I missing something simple or is something odd going on? Last edited by byzeil; 09-08-2016 at 03:45 PM. |

Perhaps only that 1 player would be ordinarily eligible?

Were they claimed already? Maybe by a team with roster space on their 40 man?

Ultimately it isn't a huge deal because the players are available to be claimed on waivers so the team can loose them even if they don't show up in the Rule 5 pool. But still curious as to what makes some players who are rule 5 eligible not show up in the draft pool when they are on waivers/DFA. Last edited by byzeil; 09-09-2016 at 01:51 AM. |

players do NOT have to be in rule 5 draft to be waived.

Correct, but that isn't what I am asking about.
I'm seeing guys not on a team's 40-man (on waivers/DFA) and Rule 5 eligible but NOT showing up in the draft pool. Along with those 3 players I'm seeing one in the same situation but he is in the rule 5 draft pool. |

If a guy has the requisite service time and is not on the 40-man roster, he is Rule 5 eligible. All of your guys ought to be in the draft pool. If not, that's a bug, and would be good to report it (though as you say, not that big a deal - I'd rather claim a guy on waivers than Rule 5 a guy, so I have the freedom to demote him later).

Good catch, byzeil. Should the game be corrected and players on waivers rightly be included in the draft pool, then this subsequent action (from What If Sports) seems to be appropriate: If selected in the Rule 5 Draft, any outstanding trade offer involving the player is automatically canceled. If the drafted player is on the waiver wire, any pending claims are canceled and the player is also removed from the waiver wire.
