Pretty much anything would be reasonable. Before 1962, the American League and National League each had 8 teams, no inter-league play, and teams played 154 games (22 against each opponent).

Historically, eight-team leagues played balanced schedules where each team was supposed to play each opponent the same number of games. That means that the a season's games should be evenly divisible by 14. Thus, leagues would ordinarily play 98, 112, 126, 140, 154, or 168 games.
